for a guy whos got the ability to carry his raw power way past his weight class I think thats what Manny has done. Its almost singular and unheard of...if hed never have another fight hell be the greatest Filipino fighter in history, the Duran of the Philippines. Hell be the greatest Asian fighter who has ever lived and really if hell never engage in another fight , hell be in the rarified air alongside of the Durans and the (Sugar Ray) Leonards
pacquiao is truly great. Wonder how it must feel like to be this man. Start out with almost nothing and end up at the top. It shows that through hard work anything is possible
I don't believe they fight alike, and I don't believe Pacquiao is as talented as Duran. However, they've both had success at mutliple divisions while maintaining their power. Pacquiao may end up being as revered by this generation as Duran was by his generation.
Serious answer: I think he's earned the right to be talked about in similar terms. He hasn't had anywhere near as many fights as Duran, but Duran went on for a very long time. Nobody these days has anywhere near a hundred pro fights and you have to rate people by the standards of their age. Pac's already got a pretty high fight count by today's standards and he's still fairly young; if he kept fighting for years he could end up with an old-school type of tally, but he seems a bit smarter than that and it's not as if he's going to need the extra paydays financially. I think one of the things we're seeing with Pac is something that's typical of the modern era, which is specialization. There seems to be a general trend of fighters maybe being a bit less well-rounded in the skill department, but really honing the skills and positives that they have to such an extent that it more than compensates. I've been waiting for years for someone to exploit Pac's so-called 'defensive weaknesses', but it's to his extreme credit that he's so quick, so aggressive, so diverse with his angles and, in particular, so dedicated to working hard to preserve his strengths that it's much easier said than done. In this respect, I agree with BigReg that Duran was more talented in terms of having a greater range of skills, but Manny probably is better than Duran at those particular skills in which he's chosen to specialize.
