I think Don King was trying to save money so there would be more for him to steal when he brought in that crew. That and he probably knew that men like Dundee, Goosen, Steward and anyone else would appose and be a threat to his management philosophy. He wanted puppets and cheap ones at that. He got so greedy that he killed the goose that laid the golden eggs. But part of Tyson's downfall was also his own doing.
yeah I was going to mention that Snowel was the one exception of the three of them and remembered that he trained Witherspoon and if I'm not mistaken prior as well? Not sure about Giachetti's view of King but he was was hired after Tyson had lost the title, and when king wanted him to get it back, so by that point he probably changed his tune.. Jay Bright was the only one that I recall hearing about having anything to do with Ali's camp and that he even sparred with him at one point, but maybe snowel had a connection as well.
Hi Dubblechin..where do u get that stuff from about Tyrell ? Ty was off drugs from Dec 84...he had a few drink issues but he personally maintains he was clean from then. He says the Duvas got rid of him because he cut easily.Biggs and Duva split after the Damiani fight not the Tyson fight , which is a common misconception. They lost patience with Ty...he had a few injuries and close shaves with cuts so they cashed him in. listen to the advice Ty was getting from his corner v Tyson....it was pathetic.
He wasn't really a trainer. He usually had another guy like George Benton or Tommy Brooks in the corner with him. Lou was more of a manager and partner in the family promotional company Main Events. I admire a guy who goes up against the goliaths like Don King and Top Rank (Arum). The Duvas started Main Events and were relegated to the Totowa Ice Rink in NJ, but grew steadily until by 1990 they were one of the Big Three Promotional Companies. I think they had most of the Class of 1984 U.S. Olympians. Lou did go bananas too easily. Definitely a hothead. Who can forget him charging at Roger Mayweather and being dropped by a right cross better than anything Mayweather landed on Pazienza that night.
http://articles.latimes.com/1989-01-08/sports/sp-309_1_trainers-tyson-boxing Guys, here is an old article (1989, I can't believe it was this long ago) by Wally Matthews on Aaron Snowell. And he has a completely different take and facts on this.
Yep... And this goes along with what I said before about King selectively choosing those which he could easily control. Another reason is that Snowell, who broke into boxing only when he was befriended by Tim Witherspoon a few years back, can be controlled easily by King. Snowell demonstrated his loyalty to King in 1986, when Witherspoon bolted the King camp in a money dispute.
Yeah.. I got confused earlier and said Prior, but I'm pretty sure it was Jackson. Thing is though, he never trained Jackson nor Witherspoon soley. He was always an assistant in those camps
Atlas and Rooney forgot more about boxing than Snowell knew. Doesn't make them great trainers but they were at least competent. Snowell wasn't.
