This guy was a good heavyweight from Wayne NJ. He fought out of the Fifth St Gym. He is a trainer now, I think. He deserves to be mentioned in any list of good fighters from NJ.
Flattened in one round by Fossie Schmidt - - and lost by K.O. to Sylvestor Kelly, Barry Funches and "Big" John Tate. Lost decision to Bill Connell (11-3-1) and Roger Russell (11-16-2). Did manage a draw with Tom Prater (WOW!) But oh yes - - Lou Esa was a great fighter :tong :nono er - - good fighter Quit giggling !!!!!!
I remember an article about him as an up and comer...He was a decent fighter and had some decent wins on his level, John Tate beat him but you are talking an Olympic rep for the USA, not such a bad loss
What did I say or do that possessed you to refer to me that way? And are you Lou Esa or have some type of relationship/friendship with him? You are a senior member here I see. I suspect you are Lou or know him somehow?
Actually I recall that article about him as well. Yes, sounded like a potential contender who could go somewhere. Exactly who did Lou defeat in the ring that would be considered a "decent win?" Odd as it may sound coming from myself, I would agree that a loss to John Tate wasn't a bad loss, since John Tate was a fairly good fighter who had a hard luck career. On the other hand, Lou couldn't make it past the 3rd round against Big John, so that is problematic. If he had lost a 10 round majority decision or lost on cuts (ala Henry Cooper) or had an injury (ala Vitali Klitschko) then it is more understandable. Maybe Lou will come on here and explain his losses? Hey, I am "up" to hearing his side of the story.
What I remember about Lou Esa was him mentioned among some others as possible future contenders. Another one was a dude named Richard Rozelle or something, but he was a bantam I think, can't quite remember the name. Regardless, I finally had a chance to see Esa on the undercard to the Roberto Duran-Alvaro Rojas title fight. Duran blows out the hapless Rojas in 1 and they have all kinds of time to fill. So they put on Lou Esa against Billy Grant in a 4 rounder and it is dreadful. Jerry Quarry was color-commentating and felt the need to say about Esa's ample waistline, "I would love to fight a guy like this. One left hook to the body..." Quarry, like the nationwide audience, was unimpressed. Scartissue
So a guy comes on here and says: this guy was a pretty good fighter, still involved in the game as a trainer, should be remembered well among New Jersey heavyweights. Didn't say he should be in the hall of fame, didn't suggest he could have held his own with Louis or Dempsey or Marciano, just said he was a good fighter. And of course an ******* has to come along and take a shot. SMFH
Well, gee Saintpat - - how many New Jersey heavyweights have there ever been? And how many New Jersey heavyweights could Lou Esa have beaten? Since Lou was a "good fighter" how many "good fighters" did Lou Esa defeat? Please name them. And what were the win/loss records of the fighters Lou Esa defeated?
