I'm just pointing out that beating Baer (even past prime) isn't that easy as you suggest. Especially not by KO, which is why I said anything about Maxie. Nova was a good puncher who knocked down Baer (only Louis did that), it's not unreasonable to think that he could give Norton tough time. I'd probably also pick Norton but more because I'm his fan. I don't want to be biased in such comparisons.
All points taken. I think Kenny gets undersold alot because of his performances against Foreman and Shavers. Kenny was an excellent boxer with a very good jab..very good power and bodywork and I liked his defense and head movement. I think he beats down Nova regardless how he did against Baer. To me it doesn't matter how he did against Max because hes fighting a guy with a completely different style and skill set. Just my opinion
LOL, you people talk like Norton's chin is made from China or Paper Mache. Norton outboxes him widely. Novas very apparent flaws get exposed by Norton and Futch.
This content is protected This content is protected Maybe not pretty, but this was a war. Both were rocked quite a few times and Nova even seemed to almost got KD (laid on the ropes). Lou couldn't beat Baer in a slugfest, so he decided to box and counter more in the second half of the fight. I'm not sure he would beat prime Maxie though.
70s, a lot has been written on this site about Nova lately, and not all of it complimentary. But I think Nova is an underated fighter. In fact, on a recent thread here that was asking for the 30 greatest heavyweight contenders of all time, Nova made my list. Aside from stopping Baer twice, he beat Tommy Farr, Gunnar Barland (twice), Pat Comiskey, Lee Ramage, Phil Brubaker and drew with top contender Bob Pastor, while just a prospect. I didn't include his win over Abe Simon because Simon was only 13-0 and Nova was only something like 9-0, so they were both pups. But I've bben very impressed with him. And - like you - I do pick Norton but in a very close fight. And I might add, I think it would have been a great fight.
Nova is all wrong for Norton stylistically. Norton is the better fighter, but Nova would probably win. If I tuned out to be wrong, then it would allow some significant reassessment of Norton's ability to deal with punchers.
The problem with Norton, is that he never produced a win over a top puncher. That is not to say that he couldn't do it, but he never showed us it. That alone might be grounds to make Nova the slight favorite!
He was a dangerous puncher, who had decent boxing skills to go with it. If I am managing Norton in that era, I will go after Bob Pastor instead!
He stopped Max Baer twice, which only Louis had done previously, and he had Tommy Farr on the verge of a knockout, which neither Louis nor Baer ever did. His cosmic punch was not all self promotion, it was a potent instrument in reality!
