In September 1937 edition of 'The Ring', Gene Kessler wrote of 'The Sock of Ages'. A pseudo prize-fight between Louis and Dempsey. Both these 'ring killers' were interviewed on the subject...

Jack Johnson dominated boxing - In shame, Whitey drew the colour line - Whitey shamelessly glorifies new white hope Dempsey - White hope Dempsey doesnt have to fight blacks - Colour line is broken - Black man Louis dominates boxing - Whitey shamelessly picks Dempsey in a hypothetical - Louis is humble on a leash

It was 1937, there was still a lot of doubts about Louis. Remember as well, we are talking about the first Black Heavyweight Champ since Johnson, some (white) people were (wrongly) concerned...

This has to be the ultimate insult to such a great man.

Louis had just started his journey, Dempsey had finished his. You need to realize you are commenting with nearly eighty years of hindsight. In eighty years time, who is to say what will be the 'consensus' view of contemporary fighters, and indeed contemporary society...

Yeah, I doubt anyone here would have picked Joe Louis to beat Jack Dempsey back in September 1937.
    (Especially after the Farr fight.)

We all probably would have rated Louis higher in 1935 than in 1937.

You cant rule out some subliminal hate motivating the story, even if Louis had just started. Dempsey wasnt even dominant for long, overrated for that time for being a white media star and the bias is pretty discernible.

to put this story in perspective, a lot of the journos, the Presidents cabinet and wealthy white were in the Klu Klax Klan, and would contrive or support stories like this in that time, and blacks were being hanged burned and gutted in towns for nothing at all (that actually makes me fell sick to the bone to write it, but its the truth about america, lets not shy from the commonfolk 'nazis' in the USA).

It would be more of a suprise to hear impartial references to black people in the 20s and 30s than biased stories like this.

The article is actually very good.
You can't take the fantasy fight stuff too seriously, but the author seems to have quite an accurate knowledge of the men's abilities and careers.

This would be a great fight, a true 'dream fight'. For the very reason that anything could happen.
I'd expect quite a short and explosive fight, no more than 5 or 6 rounds maximum. Several knockdowns. Lots of violence.
The winner ? I wouldn't bet either way.
The fight would be a thriller.

    :huh

What part of the article makes you think it was written by a Klan man ?

yes i agree its a lot of fun to read.

My money wuold be solidly on Louis, however. Like Demspeys wild swings are ever going to take down JL before Joe's perfect timing and accuracy dispatches JD.
