He couldn't affect or crack? I've seen it said on here, recently, that he could break any chin that ever existed. Did he ever fight anyone along these lines? Spar?
The only person he failed to knock out in a rematch was Cesar Brion when he was in his late 30s. Basicaly once he knew how you moved and land consistently you were screwed.
Max took a knee and quit, as opposed to being knocked out, correct? If he had the mentality, do you think he could of continued, instead of more or less quitting and making his "slaughter" comment?
Only Baer himself truley knows whether he quit or blacked out as he claimed. Either way something would have had to give if he continued taking a beating like that. He would probably have been droped again in the next round and if he was not taken out the reff would simply be forced to intervene.
He was talking to the ref, wasn't he? "These people came to see a fight, not a slaughter" Something like that.
Although Louis beat better fighters than men like George Chuvalo, Tex Cobb, Ray Mercer, Oliver McCall and Vitali Klitschko, I don't think he ever faced a man who had chins like any one of them. Most of those guys would serve as little more than human punching bags for Louis, but a few of them might at least go the distance.
Well, obviously he fought a few guys who went through the fights without being seriously decked or hurt, but certainly I believe Louis could dent absolutely any chin.
Not McCall's, likely Chuvalo's, because Chuvalo has little skill. But the more I think about it, Chuvalo probably has a shot. McCall, Vitali & Mercer likely take Louis out in the first round, especially Vitali. Cobb is below average, he fits right in with the 30's low calibre opposition.
Vitali would have size, power and a granite chin on his side, so unless something outside of the ordinarly occurred, he might give Louis some trouble. But how much and how long, who knows? McCall certainly had the stamina, chin and ring savy to survive Louis for 12 or even 15 rounds, but I don't see any technique or stylistic advantages that would help him to get a win. An aging Bruno and old Tucker both managed to out box and beat McCall, and a 40+ Holmes didn't do too bad either. I don't see McCall having much success against Louis except maybe a fluke flash knockdown.
Jimmy Bivins went 10 without being knocked down, Tommy Farr went 15 without being knocked down, Omelio Agramonte went 20 without being knocked down, Cesar Brion went 20 without being knocked down, Jack Kranz went 10 with no knockdowns, Adolph Wiater went 10 with only one brief knockdown and Patsy Perroni went 10 (but was knocked down a lot).
Vitaly Klitschko dose not belong on that list. Anybody can have an iron chin against weak opposition it is when you step up that your chin falls off rapidly. By the same criteria Louis himself could have an all time chin going into the Schmeling fight. As for the rest I dont think it is unrealistic to compare Arturo Godoy Paulino Uzcdun or Max Baer to them in terms of durability. I also suggest tyhat Cesar Brion and Tommy Farr are getting there.
