Ali/Galento = greatest press conference of all time. Galento drops Ali on his but en route to a late TKO loss. And yes they would have ended up friends later in life.
The left hook was always Alis poison. Just a thought. Either way the press conference would end up on youtube.
The left hook was definately a problem for Ali, but when I say a prime Ali, that doesn't include a 1963 version who fought Cooper, or a 75 version who fought Wepner. The only other left hook that I can think of that dropped Ali, was Frazier's, and Galento is no where near being in that league. Plus, we have to also consider that this fight came following a 4 year abscence. I can't see, galento flooring a 1967 Ali, or lasting very many rounds against him.
Galento droping Ali with a left hook was a wymsical and plausible idea on my part. A fighter who avoids punches by pulling back is most vulnerable to left hooks. Galento would not be an early stopage for Ali because he would always be in the wrong place to be hit.
This argument about Ali's competition being superior is not really convincing. Louis was beating guys who were top contenders in his time. People believing Ali's competition was better seems fairly subjective.
Schmelling beat many top contenders. He may have the edge over Foreman, Frazier and Liston in terms of number of top contenders beaten and he also displayed good longevity. In his prime Louis more commonly decisively crushed his opponnents than Ali did.
What Louis's resume really lacks is a quality win over a great fighter like Chuck Wepner. I simply don't believe that Schmeling, Baer, Braddock, Carnera, Simon, Nova, Conn or Walcott provided such a test. The bayonne bleeder would have given Louis fits to no end, perhaps even beaten him. This was a man who defeated former champ Earnie Terrell who stood 6'6". He also knocked out a fairly good prospect in Randy Neuman, and beat a fighter named Terry Hinke, who was 37-3-2 at the time for the New Jersey state heavyweight title. Not long after, Wepner went 15 rounds with Ali, and arguably dropped him once. Wepner was so spectacular that Sylvester Stallone was inspired to write the all time great cult film Rocky based on this phenomenal legend. If Louis was fighting in the 70's, he might get past his first few meetings with some journeyman, but sooner or later, it would be Wepner time!!!
But for Galento's left hook to give Ali trouble, he would have to hit Ali with it first, don't you think?
He was the #1 contender and he had a string of knockouts up to that point and was undefeated for 4 years.
Sure. Of course a left hook is the one punch that he will get hit by. You just cant time a left hook going backwards.
