Liston was a poor mans Joe Louis. Sonny had the power and a great jab but that's where the comparison ends. Joe was much quicker and the FAR greater technical boxer. The best Louis stops the best Liston within 7 rounds.

Agreed, Louis on paper should win, the better all round fighter, but, Sonny would be the hardest puncher Joe ever faced and Joe never exhibited a lot of side to side movement. He be standing right in front of Sonny. Sonny was bigger, stronger had maybe a jab in the top 5 of all time heavyweights. If Sonny's jab stopped Louis in his tracks Sonny could do to him what he did to a man of similar size Patterson. I'd make Joe a 3-2 favorite and sure wouldn't bet on it.

From what I read Liston was not in shape for this fight and could have possible been closer to 40 than 30 so the outcome is obviously Louis

Thinking about your post there and you've got me thinking now. I had Louis a clear cut ko win but perhaps not a easy match up. Of course Joe has to be the favourite here and liston was getting on in years. But factor in the strength and jab of liston and maybe not a total walk over.

Liston has a chance for sure. Joe's defense was far from impregnable and Liston was murderous.
