Can the cool- headed Marine go one better than Conn? Or will Louis ,coming in at just over 200lbs , and not dehydrated as he was for Billy ,catch up to him at some point and apply the crusher ? Fifteen rounds who do you like, and how?

    Very interesting match up.

Got to go with Louis either late or on points. Tunney is definitely going to represent himself well and win some rounds in this one.

I do think Tunney has a better chance of going the distance vs Louis than he would have against Frazier. I don't see the Brown Bomber applying the constant pressure on Tunney that Frazier would have.

    Louis knocks him out.
It would look like Louis-Pastor 2.

That was a poor fight. I'd expect Tunney to engage more.

Or one .. Louis was exceptionally gifted but not the smartest fighter that ever lived .. he excelled in rematches as he was able to be reprogrammed , something that didn't always happen in a single bout ..

Besides Schmelling, inwhich there was a legitimate learning curve was Louis slow on the pick or did he take some opponents lightly due in part to being a dominant champ?

I'm trying to remember what Tunney actually accomplished as a heavyweight.

His resume isn't deep , but stylistically I think he poses problems for Joe and ,after the threads on Louis v Frazier & Frazier v Tunney, where we were fortunate to have the invaluable insight from Perry who was, "involved in boxing," I thought I'd pose the question ,could he evade Louis' artillery and pile up points for a decision?

He beat Gibbons, Dempsey and Heeney.
I'm not overly impressed with him either, taking everything into account. Gibbons and Dempsey were past their primes, and Heeney was a crude B-level fighter.

Louis had problems with Conn, Pastor, and Farr.

Conn and Farr, not big punchers actually staggered Louis. Tunney hits harder than either man and is more durable than either Pastor or Conn as he was only floored once by Dempsey's best-filmed combination.

Good jabbers and movers troubled Louis.

Except Tunney is smarter, faster and more durable than most of the men who gave Louis issues. Louis with his predictable shuffling feet that were not fast, a low guard open to jabs and counters, and slow adaptability to tactics in fights, Tunney piles up the points and a wins.

Farr did not stagger Louis.Dempsey was the only real puncher that Tunney fought , he only connected solidly in their second fight and we saw the results of that, so his "durability" is unproven.Conn was only ko'd by Louis and the punches that did the damage would have floored and probably stopped Tunney too.

Stop press. Good jabbers and movers give everyone trouble.lol.

    This is unfair.

Tunney might have been lucky/shrewd in terms of who was who in the division when he made his moves, but these are still quality wins.

Gibbons had been the #2 contender in the division for a long time.

Dempsey was the champion, and he beat Jack Sharkey between the two fights.

Heeney was arguably the most qualified available challenger, though hindsight shows that he was not as good as Sharkey or Risko.
