The "Passing Of The Torch"...one great fighter on the way up...one great fighter on the way down....happened all thru boxing history...
At the end of 1952 ,but he hadn't been ranked since 1948,and he fought Louis in July 51. Bivins had been done at top level for 3 years!
Williams was a gatekeeper,he's been stopped by 16-7-5 Dale Hall and would lose his next 2. Wallace was famous for looking like Louis and playing him in a film,he never beat a ranked fighter.Wallace was reared on a diet of journeymen, when his competition was stepped up ,he lost.
I’m sorry you feel this way. That you determine to interpret Louis being the shell of his “former sellf”as something inferior to yourself & regular street people. You do realise 99.9% of every great heavyweight who ever lived is also a shell of what Joe Louis once was? Louis being a “shell of his former self” relegates Louis from superman to an outstanding contender who can still beat the vast majority of challengers beaten by every champion.
No matter. As you know this was a very competitive era. Contenders constantly fighting one another swapping results. Top tens interchanged constantly.you won’t find most of them that feature on yearly rankings but they were there alright. Bivins breaking back into the annual top ten AFTER Louis beat him only bares this out. He is still holding his own at top level Much later on.
I said a shell of a shell, not a mere shell. Note the difference. The Berbick version of Ali would eat him alive.
Ali was an accident waiting to happen versus Berbick. He was not beating anyone anymore. So it bares no comparison to comeback Joe Louis who WAS still winning fights.. It’s just a bogus comparison. And you know it. Ali was a retired champion. You can’t say Ali was winning fights because he wasn’t. Ali had not won a fight since 1978. So you cannot pretend Louis, who was winning fights, wasn’t climbing the ranks and by normal standards still world class legitimate contender.
Hi Buddy. I like the " Passing of the Torch " that would make a good thread, fights like Walker / Britton for instance. stay safe Rocky.
It doesn't matter that he wasnt ranked for 3 years? Bivins briefly managed a number ten place by beating Wallace who was a false alarm who fell apart when he began facing better competition.Bivins was not holding his own he hadnt beaten a top ten ranked man for years! He was now a trial horse and had been for some time! I told you before competitive does not equate to quality! Average fighters such as Brion,Gardner,Williams,Sys,Oma,Dunlop,Neuhaus,Cockell, and Wallace made the top ten in the early 50's and were competitive with each other, that doesn't mean they were that good!
Stop being a fool to yourself. Bivins was never unrated for 3 consecutive years. That’s false and you know it.@klompton2 has told you many times to stop using annual magazine rankings to make phoney points. official quarterly ratings are widely available. And you know it. In truth, apart from1947 and 1945 Jimmy Bivins was ranked in the official top ten every year from 1943 until 1952. Which is why There was a crowd of 18,215 to watch Bivins against Louis.
To watch louis not bivins In 46 Bivins had 8 fights 5 wins over third raters 3 losses to the top men In 48 he beat journeymen and lost to Maxim,Moore,Charles. In 49 he lost to Moore second rater Leonard Morrow and Harold Johnson. In what year did Bivins last beat a top ten ranked fighter? You think the crowd was there to watch Bivins? before their fight Bivins didn't say I will beat Louis,he said ,"he won't knock me out". He ran away from Louis all night. When was Bivins ever a big draw .or a crowd pleaser? s he ever a big draw?
apart from1947 and 1945 Jimmy Bivins was ranked in the official top ten every year from 1943 until 1952. you need to grasp the fact that when contenders fought 8 times a year they would win some and lose some. A 5-3 record on the year certainly was not frowned upon. That year 1949 Jimmy still got a ranking for part of the year because he was a good performer the wins maintaining his rank. other results in the division effecting things. you asked when did Bivins last beat a ranked fighter. Well Jimmy was ranked in jan 1950. He beat Johnny Flynn and Pat Valentino in 1948 and they were both still ranked Jan 1950 Bivins still listed ahead on account of wins. 1949 Bivins beat ranked Turkey Thompson too. What you won’t know is kid Riviera was rated 1950 when he lost to Willie Bean whom Bivins beat early 1951. Bivins replacing Bean before Bean could replace Riviera. But you won’t fathom any of this without referring to the official quarterly ratings rather than annual magazine ratings.
