I don't think this has ever been done before. 12 round fight 10 points system No stupid things such as: - standing 8 count - 3 knockdown rule So, does anybody give Tunney a chance ?
I don't. Louis especially at his best would win 10 out of 10. Not that Tunney would want a rematch. His jab would disrupt Gene's intention to box. It would be like a can opener. Joe's hands were blazing quick. One thing about Gene Tunney that must be acknowledged is that he had heart and was one of the superbly conditioned boxers. A very determined man. This might actually work against him here though. STAY DOWN GENE!!! STAY DOWN!!! OH GOD HE GOT UP.

You always give a guy like Tunney a chance, but I think that we would be justified in installing Louis as favorite.
I would favor Louis, but it is not a confident pick. Gene Tunney would be a handful for any fighter that came before or after him. He was a highly skilled boxer who always made a thorough study of his opponent and developed strategies around his strengths and their weaknesses. And he had alternate strategies in case he had to make adjustments. I'm sure Tunney would note the same flaw in Louis' style that Schmeling saw (Jack Johnson noticed it too). Tunney did not have the deadly right cross that Schmeling did, but he had respectable power and the straight right was one of his best weapons. Joe has the ability to end a fight quickly, while Gene's strength is piling up points while wearing down his man. This could turn out to be a tactical fight with each fighter having their moments, but one that I would certainly like to see.
I picked Joe Louis by Ko. But it would take him a good portion of the evening before he catches up to Tunney who would be stealing some rounds. Kinda like the Conn fight
I agree something like the Conn fight, who wasn't a heavyweight and was beating Louis pretty easily, until his Irish ego, got him knockout Tunney would beat Billy Conn even if he was a heavyweight, easily. Tunney was a brilliant boxer and smarter than both of them.
Tunney has a chance if he studies Louis and exploits his weaknesses. On top of that Tunney was an incredible boxer and a marine, tough as nails. Louis could feasibly lose a first match against such a tactically brilliant and tough fighter. That said, I would say the first bout is 50/50. Also with Joes track record any rematch he would have to be the favorite. Tunney is as tough as they come. He may not be as slick as Charles, as Sneaky as Walcott or as fast as Conn. But he was right under them in each category and smarter than any of them. If Schmeling saw something so would Tunney. This would be a dream fight for sure.
If Billy Conn can give Louis an extremely tough fight, can't Tunney? He had speed, ring smarts, toughness, great chin. Yes, chances are Joe nails him eventually but I'm not going to be shocked if Tunney gets a close decision win.
IDK. Was Tunney as good as Conn? Billy was a great fighter and might have a better heavyweight resume than Gene. Dont quote me on that cause I'd have to check that. Billy beat some other pretty good heavyweights i believe.
I don't know, I don't see a great world of difference between em,apart from Tunney had better ring smarts all round. Think he has the slightly better chin too.
