I would strongly suggest those interested in boxing films to investigate the web site “Historic Films”. A few months ago I found and posted nearly the entire Johnson Flynn fight. Just now I found most of the entire Louis Walcott first fight. Up until now limited highlights were only available. Who knows what else can be found here. Each round is separate so I believe you will need to go to the web site and look for it to see it in its entirety. http://www.historicfilms.com/search/?q=Boxing#p6t10798l734741
This is a very interesting web site. Several years ago I found here previously never seen before footage of Houdini which Included a brief clip of his coffin being lowered into the ground. (caused a sensation in the Houdini world). It’s a difficult web site to navigate and you need to think creatively to pull from it what you want. Could there be a clip here unmarked that shows Greb it Rosenbloom? Who knows!
My first thoughts: 1) If Louis was fighting today he'd be lambasted to no end for being a "stiff robot" and totally beatable by the first slickster he met 2) Louis' jab is sweet 3) Walcott really impressed. Frankly just by the highlights, he might have won that. He looks fluid, fast and bouncy ... and slick 4) Louis could take a punch. You can see JJW is really winging those punches in with everything he has, and Louis is like, meh, whatever, eat this. 5) Louis could swat some. When he caught JJW clean, you could see Joe didn't enjoy it.
LOL I missed the early KD's by Walcott. Started at round 5. Seems to me Walcott may have won that fight.
There's about 17 minutes of footage there. There's about 16 minutes of footage here: This content is protected So i'm not so sure about this. You'd need to run both films and see what different sections are about.
Thats the original theatrical version of the film. Its been widely available and mass produced since 1947. Its the first film Jim Jacobs ever bought. It runs 18 minutes and 15 seconds.
Walcott did win the fight. The press, 2/3 of them who saw it, said so, as did the live audience with their loud booing of the decision. The surviving footage also shows Walcott as the better. The fight was scored on the basis of rounds won. If we use the 10 points must system, Walcott has two 10-8 rounds and wins by an even bigger margin in the eyes of the press and the crowd. Joe Louis' management team had an in with MSG. He had his own personal ref in Art Dononvan who was biased in scoring at times for Louis ( Tommy Farr fight ).
This was a controversial decision. However as the bout progressed Walcott thinking he had the bout won began running rather than engaging/fighting. In the days where the prevailing thought was that a challenger had to TAKE the title from a hwt champion this was not a wise move.
