Suzie Q advocates this as a blatant robbery as bad as Lewis-Holyfield. I've only seen highlights. So what happened? Could it have gone either way? Is Suzie just nutthugging? Or was it a slight or even major robbery?
Of 33 writers ringside- 22 had Jersey Joe in front, 10 had Louis in front. I've seen extended highlights. Walcott looks a good winner from that footage, although it's inconclusive of course. However, the aforementioned margin from the ringsiders confirms it was dodgy.
Yep MDWC, I have every single one of the 15 rounds, walcott won at least 9 of them. He knocked louis down twice, outboxed him, outjabbed, outsmarted him, and outmanuevered him all night long. what more do you want a fighter to do? Louis best round was the 9th where he trapped walcott on the ropes and pummeled him....but that was it. even louis jab rarely found its mark as walcotts terrific headmovment made louis miss by inches and walcott countered with heavy hooks. walcott pretty much embarrased louis. louis knew it, he tried to leave the ring and went over to walcott after the decision was announced and said "Im sorry Joe". Walcott backpedaled the last couple rounds but it didnt matter, he was so far out in front. Walcotts corner told him entering the 15th to stay away, that he had won at least 10 of the other rounds already. When asked about Ruby Goldsteins scorecard of 7 rounds to 6 with 2 evne in favor of walcott, louis replied "I know Rube, he calls em like he sees em" you guys thought holyfield-lewis was bad? this was just as bad.
Mcgrain needs to get a new pair of glasses, how could he possibly credit louis with 7 rounds? other than the 9th round, what did louis land? LOL he landed nothing but air....you couldnt have given louis credit for his jab since he missed with it all night long. walcott's ring generalship was so good it was off the charts, he set louis into so many traps he made walcott look like the bounty hunter out there. I have to laugh that mcgrain gave louis 7 rounds.
Coming from a man who thought mayweather won 10 rounds against de la hoya, I wouldnt be questioning other peoples scorecards
I didn't know the full 15 rounds of this fight were on film - i've only seen fragmented rounds. Of what i saw, Walcott seemed to get the better, but it wasn't complete. If 22 writers thought Walcott won, then i think it's a pretty decisive win, if you consider that Louis was the heavy public favorite whereas Walcott has a spoilers style. Even during Lewis-Holyfield I, there were enough ******s that thought Holyfield won - i.e. Ron Borges and Teddy "look how tough i am" Atlas, etc.
Not full 15 rounds, but every round is on film. some show the whole round, some show 1-2 minute clips of a round, only a few show 30-45 second clips of the round. Pontius, me and you are in agreement 95% of the time when it comes to boxing, we see boxers in the same light. you have a really good eye for boxing talent and old boxers from the 40s and 50s my friend.
this is very true. The fans and sportswriters showed up to see louis knock walcott out, they wanted louis to win. so by all those people believing walcott won, means something. those louis fans cheered louis early on. but like rocky IV, the crowd changed toward the end and at the bell when the decision was announced, all of louis fans in stands BOOED there asses off.......and walcott then took the spotlight in the center of the ring despite the defeated man, and all the fans stood up and cheered wildly for walcott.
btw powerpuncher, I am a huge joe louis fan my # 1 heavyweight of all time....so it pains me to have it to tear into him like this. anyway you wanted opinions from other people, heres an opinion from the sites most respected poster John Garfield "Loved Joe, S (was onea my earliest heroes) but the judges shoulda been wearin' masks and carryin' guns when they robbed Walcott."
The full fight doesnt exist on film. Only about 1 min or each round or so exists meaning you are missing about 2/3 of the fight. Pretty hard to make a definitive judgement based on the film.
I thought the decision was pretty "definitive," k, watchin' it ringside with my dad at the ol' Garden.
Well there we have it powerpuncher! We have the opinion of a guy who was LIVE at the fight. He claims walcott defintley won, and he is a joe louis fan. Shall we say thread closed??
