Does Joe look slow to ANYONE (??) in these bit s of footage??? He was cat quick in my opinion [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJaf8Fg_DCY[/ame] how about in this?? [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPIoyH6c8PI&feature=related[/ame] or this?? [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47UVZSvDVgI[/ame] END OF - Joe had pretty quick feet - Chappie Blackburn had him sparring in rings with about 4 or 5 real heavy/slow canvases on top of each other - translation - when he got into regular rings with a normal quick canvas' his footwork would actually be deceptively quick as opposed to plodding - it's just that with Louis (as Burt said) there was no wasted effort - for anyone who can't understand this - checkout this peice all about the great Charley Burley whose style, again, was built around an economy of effort [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81non05aKX4[/ame]
I stll maintain that someone with a fast long jab and top movement could give him fits due to Louis's footwork...which while economical and generally effective, was his weakest link in skill sets.
Was it though? Louis seems to have excelent footwork when he wants to get out of the way of Max Baers right! If he had fought more oponents like that, then his footwork might be rated more highly!
That's ridiculous - you can't just base your argument that Louis had slow footwork based on whether or not he was as fast as Ali - no-one was anywhere near as fast as Ali!!?? You can't just say well he wasn't as fast as Ali so he wasn't fast??? Most fast guys aren't as fast as Muhammad Ali - just like even a lot of light heavies wouldn't have been as nimble footed as Billy Conn either
AND,,,,,,,,,,? Jimmy Brown wasn't the fastest football player either, but would you want to be in the open field trying to tackle him. Wayne Gretzky wasn't the quickest hockey player. Sandy Koufax didn't throw the fastest pitch. It's the whole package.
I think he was just as fast as a lot of lesser boxers who caught up with a prime Ali. He wasn't Brian London slow.
The more I watch and study Joe Louis, the more I feel tempted to consider him the greatest heavyweight who has yet lived.
If only we could ressurect Men like Louis, Dempsey, Johnson and Marciano and let young people today see all the subtleties that are overlooked by the poor quality of the old film and let people appreciate thier true skill. I think they'd be amazed.
No truer words were spoken.. But the film of Joe Louis and Rocky Marciano are as clear and in proper sync as todays film...It is the1%-2% of film we see today of JackJohnson and Jack Dempsey, that we see today, and judge these two old fighters by that..Like judging ali by his fights with Berbick, Larry Holmes, or judging Ray Robinson, by his bouts with tiger Jones or Joey Giardello, or Joey Archer..Today we know that these films is not representitive of these two fighters, anymore than the 2% of Jack Johnson or past prime Jack Dempsey...,For any intelligent boxing buff ,we must understand this concept, and judge them on their record and what experts of their time thought of their abilities...If the Joe Gans films available show him to be "modern" and skillful, why not his contemporaries, who he fought, should we not assume they ,whose films we do not have,to be equally "modern" as The Old Master ? Makes sense to me...
