Louis would beat Ali

Ok, I gotta step in here. Max Baer had as much will to win as Ali? Max Baer, who when asked if he could have gotten up in the Louis fight, said "If people want to watch me be executed, they'll have to pay more than $50 a seat"? That Max Baer?

C'mon Burt, I know you love the old time fighters have don't exactly have a soft spot for Ali, but that's a bridge too far.

 

Wanderer, please don't misquote me to butress your case. I SAID ABOVE THAT ALI HAD A MUCH GREATER WILL TO WIN THAN MAX BAER...I repeat in small letters, i said that" Ali had a much greater will to win than Baer did"....So why do you distort what I fervently believe and POSTED in my post a few minutes ago ?

 

Looks like Joe had a sound plan... I gotta gree with his overall strategy.

However, for this plan to work, there is an unsolved question that has haunted humankind for centuries: Can Louis close the distance and corner Ali consistently, denying him the advantage of his superb mobility? :think

If the answer is yes, then Louis has a very good chance. If the answer is no, then Ali has the upper hand.

 

You're nit picking fights IMO. Did Louis punch harder than Liston, Foreman or Shavers? I'd say definitely not. No matter how you look at it, his flat footed style would have a hard time catching up to the mobile version of Ali that beat Liston. Conn? Walcott? And this is coming from someone who's a big fan of Louis.

Louis is mis characterized as a slow footed stalking fighter without footwork. Untrue. If you really study prime Louis he could really do it all. Slick side stepping and counterpunching vs Galento, moving, jabbing and countering vs Baer, bobbing and weaving under the guard of Ramage, and yes a stalking killer vs Schmeling and Lewis. Louis had it all....one punch ko power in either fist, combinations to this day unequaled in any division, lightning quick fists, one of boxing greatest jabs, greatest straight right, one of the greatest left hooks....I would say the best left hook. Great defense....parry, slip, bob and weave. The most complete package ever in the hwt division.

 

If you want to make a point of stating that Ali was dropped FOUR times with the one punch then im sure you wont mind me saying that Joe was dropped MORE THAN FOUR times with one punch, which kinda makes your point redundant BB

 

Wrong j...In a prior post it was said that Ali had the best chin EVER...So I
correctly stated that I believe a Max Baer, a Chuvalo took a better punch as they were not dropped four times with one punch...Ali could avoid punches by many means, whilst a Baer or Chuvalo took barrages of blows and seldom if ever were floored,by the likes of a Banks, Doug Jones, Enry Cooper...History proves my point....
And NO ONE ever on ESB or anywhere else claimed that Joe Louis had an iron chin, so Louis was not part of the equation...Louis was dropped several times, but the prime Louis always arose,and finished off his opponent [Schmeling #1 and Marciano exception]...

 

the only guy to drop ali after he became champion at 22 was joe frazier and that was in the 15th from a monster of a left hook and ali got straight back up like he always did.

Louis had trouble with fast, awkward, slick figfhters (see Conn & Walcott)... Ali had all those qualities in abundance & was better & more durable than those guys.

Ali`s style is better suited to deal with Louis than vice versa.

The only flaw that i seen from Ali was that he would be sometimes vulnerable to left hooks, and this only showed when his reflexes slowed down (unless one would really factor Henry Cooper dropping an exhausted, uninterested Ali with a left hook) post exile so there's no guarantee that he would be back in his prime. Plus from the footage that I've seen, Louis never leads with the hook the way Frazier does. He only throws his hook when his opponent in his range that he wants them to be or on the ropes. Good luck trying that on a young, 1964 Ali who would be keeping him turning.
