There are indeed other muscles surrounding the abs (obliques, the various hip flexors, etc) that are extremely important beach muscles as well, but what I meant was the the ab itself. It's a single muscle that contracts as a whole, how would you contract only a part of a muscle? Unless I'm ill informed on this matter it's not possible for the bicep either, it either contracts or it doesn't, there's no such thing as contracting just a part of it. Unless hypertrophy in part of a muscle is attained in some other way.

I can live with "lower abs" if it actually means hip flexors :D

The muscle contracts as a whole but depending on the length and range of the repetition diffrent portions of the muscle are hit harder.

like somebody else suggested, try doing six inches/leg raises. that's pretty good for your lower abs. also working your obliques is real good for your lower abs. if u start working them more, see if u notice a difference.

    More replies, sweet.

Heh, so there is "such" a thing as lower abs and i understand the give and take of it as Scurla mentioned, some excercises will work the abs on a whole but more proficient in certain areas of the abdominals.

I dont have a rowing machine, yeah good suggestion though.

Its my obliques that are actually quite proud on ma body, side muscles above hips ?

Not very good with the muscle names etc sorry

I will add some pics to ma log tomorrow

    Cheers for the replies :thumbsup

I used to do core exercises like
    squats and deadlifts
    with planks and some crunches
That worked for me with a decent cardio routine including intervals
    and a good diet
    Its basic stuff really
It depends on the genes aswell if im right?
some people can eat cheeseburgers all day long and still keep that well defined 6pack

The obliques are the first places on the body to see fatty deposits. There often measured with Calipers to estimate someones BF. If you have "love handles" then time to hit the gym. You can work the obliques but to be honest you wont see notable diffrences until you loose weight, assuming your overweight.

No they wont. You only see those type of diets in the army because they burn literally thousands of calories daily. Of course those diets are unhealthy because there not balanced with the right amount of nutrients.

I'm exactly the same, it's just a case of losing the extra fat at the bottom of the stomach.
First place to go on, last place to come off haha
