Look, I'm getting tired of this back and forth. Here's my 2 cents: Bute is fighting a very weak opponent in Brian Magee, an opponent who has done nothing to earn a title shot. The mandatory challenger for Bute's title is Jean Paul Mendy, and he earned the IBF number 1 spot in an eliminator win against Sakio Bika. However bad of an opponent Mendy is, he earned his shot by beating Bika, so deserves the fight. He is in his prime and is ranked. Magee is not. I don't know why Bute hasn't been able to make fights with the other contenders/champions, but for whatever reason it is, it's resulted in him facing weaker fighters. Maybe Bute is not the one to criticise for fighting weaker opponents, but the fact is, he is fighting weak opposition. And as a boxing fan I have a right to criticise this. Champion's should fight the best out there, and for some reason or another, Bute isn't doing that. I don't hate Bute, I just want to see him fight the best. I was dissapointed to see he was fighting Magee, but if he had no alternative, then fine, I guess that will have to do. I just think that if Bute tried harder, and if showtime were less controlling, we could see fights against Mendy and Marcus Johnson, which would be better than Magee IMO. But whatever. I don't like this fight, I never will, but it's happening, and I accept that.
Martinez is fighting unbeaten, highly rated, very dangerous and fundamentaly skilled Sergei Dizinziruk, who is better than Zbik and more than deserves a title shot at Martinez. Martinez should be fighting Zbik, but Dzinziruk is a more than plausible alternative.
Young Marcus Johnson. An undefeated, rated prospect, would be a decent alternative. Look Drozzy, I'm not trying to take a shot at Bute. I'm just saying that something, maybe it's his opponents, maybe it's showtime, is stopping Bute from fighting the best fighters out there. Every fan has a right to be critical when a fighter is not fighting the best opponents out there, for whatever reason. I think that if showtime were more reasonable, Bute would fight better opponents. I can accept that it is not Bute's fault for these fights not happening, but that does not mean I have to condone them. Bute - Magee is a bad fight. I have a reasonable right to believe that, because it's true. If Showtime wont allow Bute any alternatives, then shame on them. I don't blame Bute, I blame whovever stands in the way of good fights. Bute - Magee is happening, it's not Lucians fault, I don't blame him, but it is a bad fight, and I have a right to express that opinion.
Fair enough. I guess your opinion would have been slightly different if Bute could have gotten Stieg or Sarts in the ring with him in March..? Unfortunately they both refused copious amounts of money. I'll ping you on Bute's opposition in the summer... I'm telling you, Showtime is gearing up to get him a big name. Top dog. Hopefully a FOTY candidate.
Mendy - #1 IBF Magee - #1 WBA This content is protected Mendy was basically Ko'ed in 1 round of boxing against Bika. Magee has won his last 10 fights Any other arguments ?
i like Magee. he earned his shot more than Brinkley or Miranda. Larsen was suppose to walk over him. both men had been off for a year so don't talk to me about how Larsen was a spent force who was lined up it was the other way round. if Larsen had won he would probably getting this shot as well.and i don't think thats absurd. Magee is passed his youth but he still a tough vet. and has started to settle into his style. before he was more an aggressive mover, now he has started to Winky Wright a bit and press foreword behind the guard. it think he gets beaten but he isn't that bad. **** Bute i have nothing to do with him. but Magee is a alright fighter. sadly getting this shot too late to probably make anything of it
Of course Magee is a bad fight. But Mendy is a worse fight. Mendy didn't earn his shot. He was given a spot he never diserved, and all the boxing fans except you would throw stones at Bute for taking him as an opponent. Johnson is stil unknown and if I were his promoter, I wouldn't accept a fight against Bute. He is not an option. And anyway he would be another easy win because he's too green. We agree on one thing: we both want Bute to fight the best. I hope it'll be for this summer.
Magee's opponents, as I have said in another thread today, are all journeyman and novices. Wins of no real significance. Larsen was 7 years past his prime when Magee fought him. I'm not criticising Bute. It's a crap fight and it's his promoters fault. Are there alternatives? Yes. Will his promoters/network allow the fight to happen? No. End of story.
Then you must.. you MUST believe his next two fights with Showtime are going to be against top SMWs. All this money for nothing?! Hershman isn't the idiot you picture him to be. "LB: -I'm willing to face anyone in the division. -I'm disappointed the WBA champ we made an offer to refused to unify. -2011 and 2012 will be big, huge years for me as S6 fighters will become available."
Bute will face better fighters in the summer, I truly believe that. i just think he should have fought better fighters in the interim. It seems that Showtime haven't really bothered putting Bute in with anyone competitive or tough to negotiate recently, because he will be fighting big in the summer, so it's not really important who he fights now. To Showtime, he's just waiting for the S6 to end, and whoever Bute fights in this period isn't important, as long as he gets it on with the big boys in the summer. That is just how promoters view boxing. I see it differently. I think Bute should be put in with better fighters, because he is a champ, and that's what champs should do. Showtime think that aslong as he fights the S6 winner/Kessler/Dirrell, it doesn't matter who he fights now. I think Bute should be fighting the best now, regardless of who he faces later in the year. IT's just a contrast of opinions and methods.
Sure, but who's "the best" now? Marcus Johnson? Can you imagine the flak he'd get for fighting a guy who hasn't faced any top 10 SMW, ever?! Magee relates to Froch. Johnson relates to ****all. Sorry, but they'd be selling even less seats with Johnson than they currently are. Money talks, man.
