We all know at some point Kelly Pavlik is going to fight at 168, that's what Arum and Loew have been saying for years, although the Hopkins experience at 170 turned out to be a disaster. But Kelly came back strong vs. Rubio, and had many fights over the MW limit, so I guess it's can be a realistic fight in the future.

They are about the same size, height, although, as you would guess, Bute is heavier on fight night. Pavlik is younger and he has the slightly better KO percentage. He's busier, has a better stamina and a better jab. Bute has faster hands, better accuracy, more fluid movement more effective defense. Both fighters tasted the canvas as a pro, Pavlik was down and hurt several times, but also showed better recovery than Lucian. Both are very popular in their hometown and good ticket sellers. It would be a tremendous fight that could pack a stadium.

The only common opponent is the hard hitting, but rather slow and wide Colombian puncher, Fulgencio Zuniga, and he lost by TKO to both of them. Vs. Kelly, he started very good, knocking down the Youngstown fighter via a wide left hook and shaking his legs in the 2nd. But Pavlik came back strong and used his physical size, straight punches and superior skills to win most of the following rounds in a great fight. A cut in the 8th distracted the outpunched Colombian, and Kelly unleashed hell in the 9th, so the corner stopped it. First TKO loss of Zuniga.

Bute started the fight more patiently, looking to box instead of trade, and it worked: he never let the wild puncher into the fight. He hurt him in the 3rd, dropped via left hook ot the body in the 4th and finished him off quicky with an excellent combo to rebound from the Andrade fight, which he barely won after getting KD in the 12th.

I like both fighters, they bring excitement in the ring, a loyal crowd in the arena and excellent finishing punches to the opponents. How can you not like this match-up?

So if it will ever happen, at 168, in a neutral location with 50/50 fans, who would you pick to win? :think

Bute is alllllllll wrong for Pavlik, his speed, his stance, his lateral movement, his skills, and his counterpunching

Bute schools him for a while b4 he puts him away

    Nice points.
But, Pavlik was hurt ''several'' times???
Apart from the 2nd round vs Taylor...and maybe one or two of the powerpunch in the hundreds he landed..Pavlik wasnt hurt ''several'' time.

I'll take Bute by UD though.

    Bute wide UD.
Pavlik is reduced to an ordinary fighter over 160.No speed, power, footwork, reflexes.

This is a close fight; the Zuniga fight is a bad way to compare as he had no business whatsoever at 168. I think it all depends on whether Bute has enough sting to keep Pavlik honest. If so, it would be tough to see anything more than a late TKO or a pretty wide UD for Bute. If Pavlik can walk through Bute's shots unfazed it'll be a short night for the Romanian.

I think Pavlik could win this fight. He'd certainly get hurt; but dispatching fellow aggressive fighters is his speciality.

Pavlik has a 5 inch reach advantage. He'd jab away at Bute and land lots of straight punches. He'd boss the fight from range. Bute would have to try and counter, or get inside and release combos. I don't think Bute would be able to just box like he normally does - he'd get outjabbed.

It would probably turn into a real bust up. Bute would be forced to move forward, and Pavlik's defence isn't great: it all makes for an exciting fight. But I think KP has the tools to win this: the better chin, enough power to do damage at SMW, a relentless work rate, an iron jab and reasonable hand speed. Bute's just an all-round reasonable fighter - and JT was an all-round excellent fighter, and Pavlik beat him twice.

Pavlik by close and interesting UD.

Pavlik gets ktfo. Bute is much too big, fast and skilled.

    Bute by TKO.

He's naturally bigger and more skilled, faster etc....

Both are good fighters but a big edge to Pavlik for power IMO. I voted for him because Bute is good but he does get hit somewhat, by lesser skilled boxers than Kelly.

    Really savvy, even-handed analysis, BB.

My instinct is: Pavlik walks him down and flattens him about round nine.

It could go both ways but the one that established his gameplan first would have the advantage.

I'd have to look at it more, but Bute keeps his right down and Pavlik would take advantage with the jab. Someone posted above Kelly has the reach advantage? Not good for Bute where he keeps that right hand. Lefty won't matter. Kelly is a natural lefty who fights right handed. I'd look for Kelly to land more than Adrade did. And Bute admitted he was spent in the 12 and that is why he got caught?
