rahman-lewis carvajal-arce peden-campbell weaver-tate diaz-sta. cruz mercer-damiani i know many do not believe in lucky punch...but i really call come punches as lucky
I don't believe in lucky punches. I certainly don't like it called 'lucky'. However there are some punches that even thrown on purpose, connect significantly cleaner and with a better impact than others of the same kind. For example Tarver landed many left hands on Jones, still only one in the trilogy ended up knocking out Jones. The same with Donaire-Darchinyan. Vic was hit by many quality left hands before and after, and Donaire was all about setting up that punch, scoring with it before. But still, I believe if there was a trilogy, that would still be the only left hook with the same devastating impact. It's not 'lucky', because Tarver and Donaire looked for that shot. Lewis was in bad condition, Arce offered the space for that shot. Peden-Campbell a lucky shot? :huh
campbell deserved to lose that fight..he learned his losses the hard way... [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zq9Xs8BeRuQ[/yt]
Nothing lucky about the Rahman KO of Lewis. Lewis had his left hand low so Rahman fakes a jab to the body and lands a peach of a shot right on Lewis' jaw. Pedan's KO of Campbell wasn't a lucky punch either. It was a peach of a left hook. The only luck involved was that Pedan was lucky enough to have such an idiotic opponent that night. If the shot lands where you inteneded it to land then its not a lucky punch in my eyes. Just good skill. The most recent example of what i would describe as a lucky punch was Michael Sprott's KO punch of Audley Harrison. Harrison came at Sprott and Sprott himself has admitted that he closed his eyes and threw that big left hook that KOed audley. Lucky for Sprott and lucky for us.
im not really into sprott's KO punch bec harrison doesnt really have a good chin...but still it was a bail out punch
It's going back a while now, but the left hand James Toney landed on Michael Nunn in the 11th round. Maybe wasn't lucky in as much as he meant it but Nunn was heading or a wide UD, so he was pretty lucky lo land it with only about 4 mins of the fight remaining.
Hindsight comes into play here. At first thought Oleg M.'s one puch KO Rahman in their first fight might classify as lucky, until their second fight, then the luck thought goes away. I really think Rahman KO of Lewis falls into the "lucky punch" category. I thought Lewis was winning in an extremely uninspired fight. Neither fighter seemed to be giving that much effort. Plus, if I recall correctly, Lewis hand his hands up and the barely missed his glove and nailed him on the chin. I also think that Kirk Johnson's big left hook that initially hurt Oleg M., leading to a KO, was a lucky punch. Oleg was dominating the fight until that point. Probably some others I will think of later.
You can still be lucky, some punches you throw land, others don't and it has as much to do with your opponent as yourself. For example, you might be lucky if the guy your fighting had a struggle to make weight and isn't as sharp as normal, or if he's distracted or something.
C'mon man. That's all part of the fight game. Everyone has an excuse prepared and ready for any loss.
For me lucky is what in other meaning... the opponent is so careless. Like he is holding a sign that says... "Free shot in here"
