Steven Luevano recently lossed to Juan Manuel Lopez. Luevano was the WBO champion for the last 2 or 3 years. But he may not regain that or any championship title anytime soon. Luevano could fight Gamboa for the co-WBA title (also held by Chris John), but it's highly doubtful since Gamboa is on a crash course to fight Lopez one day, and Luevano does not have a championshipe belt to offer, and therefore a high-risk but low reward situation for Gamboa eventhough I think it would be an exciting matchup. Luevano could fight Chris John for the co-WBA title, but again why should John fight a high-risk low reward fight when he can fight Gamboa or Lopez for titles at stake? It's also possible that Gamboa and John will fight one another soon to settle who is the true WBA champion. The other options would be Cristobal Cruz for the IBF title, and Elio Rojas for the WBC title. I admit I'm not too familiar with both fighters, but they do have solid wins over Jorge Solis and Hector Velasquez respectively. But Luevano is not ranked in the top 15 in the IBF, and I don't know what his ranking is in the WBC. If anyone can post it, please do so. Luevano could go for another alphabet soup title, but I won't get into those. So it looks like Luevano has a tough long road back to the championship title unfortunately for him. The circumstances don't seem to favor it. Anyone care to comment? This kid is a very good fighter after all.

Hes a solid fighter, but yeah I dont see him getting a shot for awhile- his best bet would be to go to 130 b/c he'd have an automatic ranking in the WBO. He doesnt have a fan base, isnt particularly exciting, and isnt charismatic. Tough road ahead.

I recommend a nice vacation for him. Solid title reign ending with a knockout loss. Take some time off.

The fight against Lopes was a BS stoppage.

Luevano is a solid champion. It's just unfortunate that P4P entrants happened to move up in his weight class.

I've seen worse, easily. But my knee-jerk reaction was that they called it too fast. Borderline premature. I would've given the reigning champion more of a shot, but really I don't think it'd have lasted past that round, the next at the latest.

I wish Lueveono the best i was rooting for him,ive known of him for awhile (same Area) I saw him fight at the Blue n Gold back in the 90s when he was only 12 i remembered him cause he won best fighter of the tournament, and later i used to go to a bakery where they had pictures of this Boxer kid with all these trophys and it happened to be Steve Luevano. I think hes good and i think he could beat most guys in the division, but i agree with boxed ears he was champ for a few years and should relax for a few months before getting back. Him and Rocky Juarez might be an intresting matchup,it would be a rematch Luevano lost to Rocky in the Olympic trials.

I agree but I think that Luevano should definitely take time off to heal

I disagree. He was wobbly and when the ref asked him to come forward he just fell back into the ropes. The ref had to stop it.

    Nah.

It was a very good stoppage. When he was up at 8 he was wobbly. The ref did a good thing.
IfLuevano would have continued he would just have been a highlight reel KO.

The super fast super strong youngsters shouldn't even be in his sights. Whatever belts Lopez and Gamboa has, he should just not worry about ranking in those orgs. If they unify, he should bail to a different weight class if he still wants to compete.

Even though he did okay against Lopez, it's clear that these explosive athletic types are dangerous for him.

He can easily beat a Cruz or Rojas, however. Styles.

Moving up might not actually be a bad idea, though - since he relies on pure boxing more than power anyway, it's not like having slightly lighter hands at superfeatherweight would affect his game at all. In fact, he may even gain a little strength.

Luevano vs. Guerrero has been a bit of a dream match of mine for a long time - battle of the overachievers. As much as I like Guererro, he doesn't fit that same mold of really explosively athletic dangerous guys like Gamboa and Lopez.

Thanks everyone for all your responses. Luevano has some "outs" as they say in Texas Holdem' Poker especially the option to go up to 130 lbs. Maybe he can steal a title there even temporarily. Or how about entertaining the idea of him moving down to 122 lbs.? Too much weight drain?

Up is better than down, IMO.

Luevano holds a win over Cristobal Cruz...

umm.......... Luevano is a Cornelius Lock or a Rocky Juarez fight away from being back in the title picture... All Steve gotta do is fight guys that are good enough that TV will want to pick it up... I see Matt Remillard is in this division, Cornelius Lock, Antonio Escalante, Monte Meza Clay... Steve still has some opportunities....
