Abregu is a fighter who is very successful fighting his native Argentinian opponents. He started taking fights in the States a couple of years ago, which is pretty significant since many Argentinians that have some modest success are quite content with only fighting in their home country. Abregu's first big step up was against David Estrada. Abregu looked noticeably frustrated to see that his power was carrying over well with this step up. But again, he shouldn't be too hard on himself.... Estrada's a tough cat. Some were upset with Abregu's showing, I felt he did enough to deserve a UD in that fight. But, to show his resolve he came back to the States to fight Irving Garcia in an incredible match. As said, Abregu is hittable (not Katsidis hittable.... but still hittable). But, he also is great at recovering. He was knocked down very hard in the 4th.... the type of knock down that many don't get up from. He did, he recovered and he still had the presence of mind to find an opening to take out Garcia in possibly one of the better rounds in 2009. I like Abregu. He's a smarter fighter than one would assume when they hear "hittable fighter". The win over Garcia was a big confidence builder, I'd expect to see him taking on more fights here stepping up in class at welterweight. He's a taller ww too, here's hoping that he finds a trainer that can exploit that better than his current trainer. Because he can follow his right straight with thudding ko power right behind his jab.... he just doesn't do it that much.
His defense is horrible...but not a bad counterpuncher for a slow guy and does have some good pop in his hands. Pretty good ESPN level fighter and the Garcia fight showed that...he will be in some entertaining fights in the future..but I dont see him being a threat to anyone half decent.
he is fighting Guitterez next that should be an interesting fight, Guitterez is on the downside but I still remember him taking out Reid, stunning Angulo and giving Clottey all he can handle.
Here's something that should build Gutierrez's confidence, Abregu was dropped a couple times by Garcia, who's not a puncher... So his chin right is a big question mark... Gutierrez is a hard puncher, but hasn't looked good in the last couple years... This should be a god fight...
I saw his fight against David Estrada. He started well and looked like a fluid puncher until he got to about the sixth round. From the sixth on, he looked flabbergasted that somebody will still standing there in front of him and willing to take his punches. He also gassed out and looked to be on the verge of collapsing throughout the last two rounds. I thought he took the fight 96-94 but there were some people he felt he lost. I think he's going to be similar to Jason Litzau. A decent ESPN type fighter who has some entertaining fights but fails to make any sort of impact on the national level.
what has happened to Guitterez in his last few? anybody seen them? I remember he stunned Angulo before getting stunned himself, and when he was at his worst moment, stunned with Angulo on the attack, the ref let Angulo try and finish him off rather than stopping it, when it became clear that Guitterez was going to be ok - at least out of a pickle for the time being, the ref decided to stop it. It made me think the ref wanted Angulo to get a nice dramatic finish but when he realized Guitterez wasn't quite done yet that it was better to end it - better for Angulo that is. can anbody tell me about the Antwone Smith fight or the Ellis fight? Guitterez vs Clottey could have easily been a draw. btw, I'm not saying Guitterez would have beaten Angulo, just that he was fine at the time of stoppage, and was far worse earlier when the ref was ok with them continuing. Maybe Guitterez hasn't deteriorated, I mean, he had an MD vs Hicket Lau earlier on, maybe his style, when he can't rough somebody up, he loses rounds coming in and trying. Abregu on the other hand, had a ref that wanted to stop Garcia the first time he went down, the ref was waving his arms to Garcia telling him not to get up, and he did not such thing to Abregu either time he was down. The second time Garcia was down, the ref wouldn't allow him to get up when he clearly wanted to and was coherent. Yes, the combination of punches that sent Garcia down the second time was certainly taxing, but Abregu had been floored the same round and Garcia was talking to the ref trying to get back up. That stupid ass announcer says the difference between the two fighters was Abregu got up.......that was a dumb thing to say considering Garcia was not allowed to get up. I am not a big Guitterez fan and Abregu hater, just trying to figure out who wins....I need to know about Guitterez's last few fights though and what happened, I think Guitterez has a shot, Abregu likes to mix it up and he can be caught.
He has quick fists and is a good offensive fighter, but he has huge defensive holes. Can be fun to watch (his fight with Irving Garcia was a closet classic last year), but he's not consistently fun to watch. Probably no worse than that entire range of third-tier welterweights (i.e., Aydin, Zaveck, Bonsu, Rodriguez, Shamone Alvarez, etc.), but not really any better than them either.
Antwone Smith outworked and outsmarted Gutierrez. Smith was a bit too slippery for Gutierrez, and he was able to land consistently by coming at odd angles. It was a close fight early, but by the end Gutierrez was demoralized. Anyway, Abregu won't pose the slickness problem. Abregu is there to be hit. He tries to be a cutie, but the reflexes aren't there and he gets nailed a lot. Abregu should be able to outwork Gutierrez, and his offensive arsenal is a lot more varied than Gutierrez's. Could be a close fight though. Abregu doesn't seem to love pressure, and he's gone life and death with some pretty mediocre fighters in the past.
thanks for the info on the Smith / Guitierrez fight that the thing, Guitierrez has faced the higher level of guys and come up short, Abregu is on the rise and Guiterrez on the slide, it may be possible to get some nice odds on Guitterez here, and Abregu is going to get hit, Guitterez can take a punch, but bettors will see a TKO vs Angulo where as people that watch fights will know that he weathered the storm vs Angulo I am hoping Abregu is a big fat favorite, the guy went life and death vs Garcia...makes you wonder how Guitierrez would have done vs Garcia....now what the heck happened to Guitterez vs Jerome Ellis?
