Núñez is rushing in and stuffing the jab into Arias' face. Arias steps back and lets a Núñez right hand skid along his cheek as he whips Núñez with a 1-2. Arias pours on some extra right hands across the back of the head as Núñez staggers and turns away. Núñez is down!!! He beats the count but looks dazed. They rush in together and Arias unloads on Núñez at point blank range with 1-2s. Núñez is down again. Up once more and Arias nails him with right hands, jolting his neck and stiffening his entire body. Núñez won't fall but is defenseless. The ref cuts in.

That was an enormous upset, when you look at who Núñez has fought and consider that any of his best half a dozen opponents would be massive steps up in class for Arias.

Hell, even the always-game Kyrgyz journeyman Timur Shailezov is better than everyone Arias has fought before tonight.

 

A star who this year will be 32 (ancient for a flyweight) and whose next loss puts him in double-digits... :yep

You can, however, probably call him the #1 guy in the Dominican boxing scene for having scored this upset. Most of their biggest names have seen the wind die in their sails of late, due to various circumstances. (hot prospect Marrero exposed, Rodriguez outclassed badly if not unexpectedly when he challenged Ward, Mendez unofficially KTFO by Rances Barthelemy, D-Rod obliterated by Cotto, Fortuna still undefeated but looking shitty in his last couple of distance outings, Vicente losing his zero and two of his last four, Cayo shot to bits, Lorenzo mediocre as ever and stopped for the first time by Jacobs recently...)

 

Yeah, he is totally untested - but I've read (and Google translated :! a lot of buzz, from both Mexican and some Panamanian boxing fans, who think he could be extraordinarily dangerous for Concepción. :think

Hell, anybody with a puncher's record has to be considered dangerous for Concepción unless he can blast them out in a hurry. (though just one man to date has exploited the fact that Concepción's punch resistance isn't commensurate with his own power and stopped him, and that was a proven legitimate big puncher in Tyson Marquez...)

Concepción is stalking and putting out his left jab. Fontes circles left and drops in right jabs on the body. Fontes is extending his right jab into the guard, doubling up and probing with a left. Right jabs on the body by Fontes backing up. Concepción flicks a couple of left jabs out in the air, firing a powerful right up top. Fontes is able to skip back out of the way, using his height to stay clear of Concepción's big shots. Fontes lands a couple of light right jabs. Big right uppercut to the body rushing in by Concepción. Fontes fights off the ropes with a right jab and left uppercut.
