Yep. Not buying this even its on the web for a free download/spam. I have zero interest. Who cares! Two past their primes who were never good in their primes.
There have been so many pay-per-view main events that have been totally lopsided and a foregone conclusion before the first bell was even rang. This is at least a competitive bout. Although I never pay for pay-per-view events, I don't find this any more strange than someone forking out for Haye vs Harrison, Tyson vs Francis, Joshua vs Molina, Fury vs Schwarz etc. The reason why I enjoy watching sport if for its unpredictability and competition, not for the celebrity aspect of watching a "name" like Tyson, Joshua or Fury.
When I was a little kid my great grandfather taught me two important principles, 1) always hide some cash in case there's a run on the banks 2) Luis Ortiz would of given Dempsey a run for his money if Ortiz was just a bit younger
Exactly. People seem to forget that good, entertaining fights often occur at levels below the top tier. Just because a fighter may be mediocre, old, washed up - or all of these things - doesn't mean they can't deliver good entertaining, competitive boxing. Now, I happen to believe that Ortiz - assuming he has anything left at age 50+ - is a cut above Martin and will shatter the latter's questionable mandible fairly early. But, I could be wrong, which is exactly why I'm tuning in.
I would love to see some honest numbers on how this does. King tried something similar in the mid 2000s (with a more intriguing heavyweight lineup) and I don't believe it did well.
I get what you're saying but there are literally tons of fights that are competitive on an almost weekly basis. Just because it's competitive doesn't make it PPV-worthy. Don't get me wrong, I agree that those 4 fights you named aren't PPV-worthy either. But big names generate big audiences regardless of who they're facing, and if the demand is there then PPV is often the method that generates the most money for both the fighters and promoter. But there is literally zero reason for Ortiz vs Martin to be PPV. They aren't big names. And it's not even that competitive, if Ortiz has anything left at all, he will beat Martin with ease.
Gonna say Ortiz still has enough left at 42 to KO Martin, especially as Martin hasn't fought in almost 2 years. Good to see they brought in Hammer instead of Negron for Sanchez, that's a much better match up.
I love Ortiz, but I have a bad feeling that those two quite brutal KO losses have taken a toll on his durability and his age is finally going to catch up to him here. I think he'll start gassing around the 6th, Martin will take over and stop him late. Martin's chin is better than advertised, he wasn't even really hurt against AJ, it was more the angle of the punches, AJ's punches naturally having a ton of force behind them and his pisspoor stance and balance which led to both KD's occurring, and the older Ortiz gets, the less his power has been a factor. Also, this is southpaw vs. southpaw, Ortiz won't have his usual advantage of an awkward extreme southpaw stance to give him issues, and Martin's athleticism, defense and speed, which was on full display against Washington, has improved greatly under Manny Robles, and I think that form will carry over here. I think Martin will play it safe for the first half, and go all out in the second half. Much like what he did against Kownacki, who he'd have probably stopped had it been a 12 rounder.
Put me down for Ortiz by TKO by Rd 2 or 3. I supsect that Luis Ortiz goes through Charles Martin like a tornado goes through an Amazon warehouse. I could list lots of reasons why Luix Ortiz is a particularly difficult assignment for Luis Ortiz - but given how uncompetitive the fight is likely to be; I'm not going to bother. That said - you can't expect Ortiz to put in more than ~4 high-quality rounds before he starts to wilt. If Martin weathers those...yeah, Ortiz could gas and be stopped. But I think Ortiz knows he's on the clock from the get-go and will take advantage of Martin's many flaws.
I'll root for him when he fights another live body. He got so much hype and people vouching for him but he had beaten nobody of note. He should have been fought Parker, Ruiz, Whyte, Chisora, Pulev, Hrgovic etc so we could get the measure of him.
