Great power, little bit smaller but damn they have the same style and devastating blows.

Better more disciplined version of Sam Peter?

They could have made for a very decent and memorable scrap back in their mid to late twenties. (had Ortiz not lingered so long in the amateur game, and Peter not been with risk-averse Don King throughout his prime).

    Did Ortiz win any medals?

343-19, silver & gold in the world championships, but never fought in the Olympics for some reason.

Probably just bad timing. His career spanned the end of Savon's reign overlapping the beginning of Solis'.

Without them in the way he may well have medals.

That explains it then. Second fiddle syndrome.

Ortiz still has time left to have a better pro run than Solis, though. He at least trains and stays in shape and finally seems to be stepping up.

35 is pretty late to 'step up' to a washed up Monte Barrett though. Shame he didn't make a fist of it earlier.

    15rounds article from 2010:

Several other Cuban Heavyweights have turned pro since you have including Mike Perez, Luis Ortiz, Yasmany Consuegra etc what are your thoughts on those guys?

Solis: I don’t care about other fighters. When I meet them I chat with them but I don’t talk about boxing. It doesn’t matter to me. The guys you mentioned were looking up to me when I was the amateur champion. I fought Luis Ortiz a couple of times at the amateurs and beat him at will. The other two were still too young. I think I’m sort of an idol for them. I’m happy for them that they want to try their luck at the pros but they won’t have any chance to win a title – at least not as long as I am around…

WTF is the deal with Consuegra, anyway?

15-0 (13) and last fought as recently as December...yet has faced nobody, correspondingly has no ranking in any major org, and nobody ever mentions his name.

His best scalp is freaking Bigfoot Stacy Frazier. (whose only claim to fame is one-hitting Dokiwari, a decade ago)

Has anybody ever seen him? Legit power?

I just did a search for his name on the board and it turns out Consuegra was supposed to have been a part of Sulaiman's planned "World Cup" tourney, facing off against Juan Carlos Gomez for the right to advance to a Magomed Abdusallamov match-up.

Fast-forward a year and Sulaimain has died - with his ambitious tourney scuppered even before that, at the first signs of his deteriorating health - and Consuegra is the only active (but still irrelevant) heavyweight boxer left among them...with Abdusalamov never again competing and Gomez dropping back down to cruiser.

Ortiz to his credit appears to have a more pro style than Solis.
He has intent on the ko with his shots, and he commits to body punching witch is refreshing to see.
Still like Wilder he is unproven against top 20 opposition, and like Wilder we will probably get to see him step up aganst a top 10 guy in his next fight.
    Povetkin perhaps?
