He was getting "stitched up"... Ustinov was kinda in shape for this one, and we can't have that! :bart
Looks like JoJo Diaz just found his way into the Alvarez PPV card now. Hopefully GB matches him with a good opponent. Ortiz blew it.
Can't blame him for wanting out of GBP as they're clearly not pushing him like they're doing with their little Mexicans but where does Ortiz go from here? Can he just easily leave GBP and sign with Haymon? He can't afford wasting years in courts.
Something just seems amiss with this. I've seen a fairly recent interview with Ortiz where he spoke with a lot of ambition and belief in himself to get far in his career, to take on all comers etc. I mean it's hard to tell for sure as he was speaking Cuban but he seemed sincere to me.
GBP have sold him short but to be fair his career is just gaining ground and he has a big fight against a known opponent on a big fight card. Why has he chosen now to start playing silly beggars?
Hard to understand, yeah. He should've at least waited to see what'll happen with the WBA tournemant and go through with the Ustinov fight.
GBP may be pushing some of their other guys more than Ortiz but they've still done good work with Ortiz the last year or two. Almost all of his last 5-6 fights have been on some sort of tv outlet with his last two being the headlining fights on HBO cards. This next fight would have been the top undercard fight to a major ppv show. He was also in position to land a major fight soon by being in that WBA tournament they were doing. A match with the Fury-Wlad winner seemed to be right around the corner. I have no idea what he's making or thinking and maybe he's 100% in the right here but on the outside, when you factor in his age and future possibilities , pulling out of this fight seems like it could be a bad career move.
GBP stuck by him through the drugs scandal, got him the WBA interim/Regular belt whichever it is and got him a good fight with Jennings and a fight on the Canelo PPV undercard. There is only so much you can do with a 37 year old Cuban, who doesn't speak English and failed a drugs test.
I think he spent too long fighting on the undercards against mediocre opponents before the Jennings fight. He could've fought guys like Mansour, Stiverne, Chambers, Washington if he was with Haymon.
My gut feeling is that Ortiz knew he was going to get popped with a positive test again if he went through with the fight. Better to look like a duck and blame the business side than to ring up another positive test and give the rest of the top heavyweights another perfectly legitimate reason to never fight you.
