Anybody who thought Fury should have went from chisora to ustinov on two days notice is a moron who dksab.
Kong is scared of the Russian Frankenstein... just like the Gypsy FatBoys 'the Fury's' we're!! Kimbo Slice scheduled to fight Ustinov... backed out of the fight, then died a year later of a heart attack... didn't GayeMaker duck Ustinov also? :huh
Couldn't he just claim injury? I mean, if he said he hurt his back and needed a month, who could prove otherwise?
I don't care for Ortiz one way or another. I like to watch him fight. I think he's a little old. I don't know how much time he's got left in the game. That said, I don't think he's worried about testing positive. I think he's just got the wrong promoter. Golden Boy wanted "a heavyweight" just to have one and be a player. They signed Ortiz. They got him TWO WBA "interim" title shots against the worst guys to ever challenge for a vacant heavyweight belt (and that's saying a lot). One was on Fox Sports 1 that nobody watched. The other was buried on a PPV undercard. Now Ortiz has THE WORST belt in the whole division. He's stuck in this ridiculous WBA tournament. Browne - who could've brought excitement won and he was kicked out for PEDs. Chagaev got reinstated and he'd rather retire than be a part of it. Fres Oquendo is like 55 years old. He hasn't made a peep and hasn't fought in TWO YEARS. On top of that, Ortiz is making sh*t money. He was going to fight Ustinov on a Canelo undercard that nobody is going to buy. And if he was going to make $200 grand for this Ustinov fight, I'd be shocked. I'm sure it was going to be less. There were no purse bids. The WBA was going to mandate a purse bid, with the minimum bid of $600,000 split 60-40, but Oscar and Ustinov's promoters worked it out. (Meaning they agreed to terms so they wouldn't have to pay that much themselves.) And Ortiz was going to have to pay a sanctioning fee to the WBA even though his belt is meaningless. (His belt isn't a WBC, WBO, IBF or WBA belt, or even as high in the pecking order as the WBA "regular" belt. His "interim" belt makes it the SIXTH highest belt on the list.) I think he just wants out. (By that I mean from the WBA and their "interim" belt and from Golden Boy.) He can make a million or two fighting Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua in the UK as a challenger. He can make a million or so fighting Deontay Wilder in the States as a challenger in a big fight. He can go fight Lucas Browne or Joseph Parker for big money. He can be showcased in main events ... and not buried on undercards. He doesn't have much time. And that WBA tourney is a freaking death march. David Haye is fighting on DAVE - England's version of Comedy Central. He appears to be the only one interested in snagging a WBA strap. And that's about the level that tourney is at presently - Comedy Central level. And if Haye was going to leap over Ortiz and fight for the WBA "regular" belt against some mope like Oquendo, while Ortiz has to fight that MOUNTAIN Ustinov, I'm sure that rubbed Ortiz the wrong way, too. Good for Ortiz. I hope he gets away while he can still punch with the big boys.
Hm. Good assessment I think. Most convincing explanation I've heard. Makes sense after he finally got some good wins that he feels he can escape. Still though, it seemed like this would've gotten him on an "okay" path towards Fury. Where can he really go now?
I think I explained where he could go. Anywhere but that "tourney." Where the pay is awful, the opponents are awful, the exposure is nil. He should be making a million dollars a fight minimum. He's pushing 38. By the way, *********** just said the WBA has called for Purse Bids for the Ortiz-Ustinov fight ... even though Golden Boy and Ustinov's teams agreed to terms. Apparently, Ortiz just refused to sign even though Golden Boy negotiated a deal. Clearly, he wasn't going to be making anything worth his while. Like I thought. Maybe someone will swoop in and steal that fight off the Canelo PPV with a higher bid? And take Ortiz away with them?
Yeah, but how's he going to get those fights with Wilder, Fury, Joshua, Browne etc? He's going to have to go back to the climbing the ranks. It's going to take a few fights against guys who aren't worth his time. I'm not sure this is going to save him much effort.
I hope a bidder comes along and wins the purse bid and puts the Luis Ortiz-Ustinov fight in the main event on a card held in freaking Havana. That would get attention.
Without a WBA belt, he'd be ranked by the other orgs. You don't have to be the number-one contender to get a title shot. Spend two minutes reading this board. :deal Wlad isn't. Breazeale wasn't. Arreola wasn't.
You don't have to be the number one, but that's if the champ wants to fight you. It's hard to believe any of those guys would want to fight Ortiz. Especially if they only have to wait a few more years before he's no real threat at all. I just don't see Wilder or Joshua wanting any of that. If they're going to face someone that good, they would probably prefer a bigger name (eg, Fury would rather face Wilder or Joshua).
Haymon and Hearn would definetly be willing to sign with him, but will he be able to get out of his contract with GBP?
Sad, really sad, he isn't young enough to sit this out, whatever has happened I really don't like to see fighters sidelined over contractual disputes, it's such a short career and this sort of situation can be so damaging.
