In the short term it was most likely easier money, but the earning potential of a sparring partner has limits and what ever chin he had got used up as a sparring Partner. Holmes talked about earning much more money as a sparring partner than he did as a young contender, but he had to quit, because a full time sparring partner has to dedicate them self to working around someone else's career rather than their own. Also, I agree that Chagaev and Povetkin would've never fought Scott, since he brought no money to the table.

I still say Ortiz the most skilled man in the division. I think as good as the Cuban style is tho...its quite a flawed style. He's an excellent counter puncher...but its negated by size or defensive opponents. He didn't really learn to open opponents up properly. A lot of the time his style was take one to land his own knowing he,d outlast most of them. Jennings actually out punched Ortiz in their fight. Ortiz basically set traps by allowing Jennings to get off then giving his own back. He was also a bit too slow of foot to cut the ring off quick enough. Cubans to me seem a little bit stuck in their ways...its an excellent style but needs adjustments...adjustments they don't seen to want to make.

No doubt a good fighter but the "avoided" tag is mainly Wilder nuthuggers trying to make their boi into this unwavering monster...

A good win against Jennings but really Jennings tried to go toe to toe.. Thompson was a late replacement and was so shot and out of shape he makes current Haye look prime..

Both Allen and Scott were joke fights but did show that Ortiz wasn't as good as the huggers made out...

Avoided, well he brings nothing to the table so he isn't going to be chased for a fight like say AJ because why bother..

A couple of guys mentioned Whyte like he was ducking him (lol) but he has a PPV fight against a guy who went 12 rounds with AJ last start so I'd imagine financially it was a no brainer...

Ortiz really only has himself to blame as he has no profile, no English, no personality and has just cruised along when he should have been getting himself into mandatory positions.

Failing two drug tests haven't helped either...

Ortiz will be forgotten in 3 years.

So much for being a "bogeyman".

Ortiz is the most skilled HW out there. Unfortunately he didn't have the best promotion team behind him for several years and also made some bad decisions in his career. It's tough to say what happened if he he would have started his pro career 4-5 years earlier. Another point is he made it through some tough private stuff over the years so boxing was probably never the FIRST thing in his life in terms of priority.

He is a world class heavy-handed southpaw with genious ring iq, prob the best counterpuncher in the division and has great boxing skills overall.

He would beat 98% of the current HWD EASILY by the way of KNOCKOUT.

Ortiz looks like an authentic heavyweight champ but I don't see him getting another shot now. He's done.
