Ortiz is now the modern day Ron Lyle, a guy who started late, and has been made into a legend based on a KO loss.

 

I forget where I read it because it was years ago, but some study found that before attaining a title shot most fighters of the last twenty/thirty years wouldn't have any fights with other fighters in the top 10 of their division. This was compared to the average contender of the 40s 50s and 60s who had to fight a slew of contenders and gatekeepers to get a title shot. I think the article also speculated that a title shot was so much more lucrative that contenders didn't want to fight each other and risk losing their shot at the champ by blemishing their records.

 

It's why Fres Oquendo hasn't fought since 2014.
