Luis Rosa Jr. vs. Andre Wilson, 8 rounds @ featherweight

 

Round 1

Rosa is throwing his jab halfway out and pulling it, rear leg partly bent, then springing up with high straights pushing off the back heel as Wilson is countering with his right jab. Rosa catches Wilson on the underside of the chin with a grazing left hook while flurrying in past a Wilson right jab. Slapping right hooks by Wilson circling at mid-range. Rosa pounds Wilson with a roundhouse body shot and Wilson plops to the ground. Wilson is up and Rosa is on top of him throwing left and right hooks into his biceps, knocking him out of step and teetering in either direction. Wilson manages to stay up and plant his feet, standing in and tying up.

Round 2

Rosa is turned southpaw and winging in right hooks, setting up his left uppercut to the body. Wilson is scrabbling at Rosa trying to hold. Right hook by Rosa drops Wilson. Rosa is doubling the right hook coming forward, looking strong, plugging the left into the body as Wilson pinches his torso in between his forearms.

Round 3

Rosa is thumping Wilson's body and denying him the clinch. Rosa is busily ripping away with both hands, pulling each arm free as Wilson tries pinning them down. Big right hook by Rosa, scoring his third knockdown tonight. Wilson is on Bambi legs and the ref just waves.

TKO3!!

 

Luis Rosa Jr. has the ring name "KO King" (nod to Randall Bailey) printed on his waistband, and David Diamante introduced him as such in both the preliminary intros and the result announcement.

This was, however, only his seventh KO in sixteen outings. (1 no contest, eight points victories).

He improves his overall record to 15-0-0-1 (7) and his KO rate to 43%. He will need to up that a bit more for the moniker to not seem grotesquely inappropriate. Even here, with the multiple knockdowns and finishing Wilson off, he didn't look to have murderous one-punch clout. :conf

 

Next for Rosa Jr. is a massive leap up in class as he takes on Jorge Diaz in the 2014 season premiere of ESPN2 FNF.

 

Boyd Melson vs. Gundrick King, 8 rounds @ middleweight

 

Southpaw versus southpaw...

 

Round 1

King is rolling his upper body on the outside, fists up in front of his face, diving in with right hands on the body. Melson is jabbing down at King and clubbing with the left hand behind the neck. Lot of clinching. Very ugly opener.

Actually, it turns out King usually boxes orthodox (as listed on Boxrec, and the commentators just pointed it out) but has been in the guise of a southpaw from the opening bell here.... :think

 

Round 2

Melson is faking the jab and then stepping in with a slashing right upper-hook. Melson is landing his longer right jab past King's from the outside, pushing him across the ring. Melson drops in a 1-2 on the forehead and King sits back with it, springing up with a left hand on the eye that backs Melson up. Cuffing right hook across the back by Melson as King moves in and they clinch.

Quiñones says the first two were difficult to score because there was very little clean work and not much activity period. Adams says that usually the "home" guy will get those rounds. Shields points out that Bernard Hopkins once said that if he is the visitor in a hostile environment and has a close 'nothing in it' round like that, he automatically knows to count it as being one he lost. :yep

 

Round 3

Melson is rocking King with right hooks and struggling to land followups as King hangs onto his waist. Melson is putting together combinations, right hook, left cross, right hook, and King is getting badly hurt despite getting his arms in the way of some of the shots. King is flurrying and pushing out with both gloves by turn as holding attempts fail, looking to get a little space between them. It works against him as Melson is able to hammer down with a right and hurt King again. Melson turns orthodox and throws some big right uppercuts. King is showing a decent chin here.

Round 4

Melson is placing the right jab with his lead foot touching down briefly before retracting the step and staying tall on the outside, not lingering in countering range for King. Jabs to the body by Melson. King is ducking under Melson's jab and hurtling in to grab. Roughhousing and body taps by King in the clinch. Right jabs to head and body by Melson bucking his way free.
