Brian Adams muses that Gundrick King is only here for a paycheck as he is only throwing a punch every 60-65 seconds which is no way to win.

 

It has been six minutes since the 4th ended. Melson and King are still awaiting the bell, sweat cooling, along with the referee.

 

Quiñones says that King is risking having the commission fine a part of his purse upon review of the film with his lack of effort.

He points out the damaged reputation can be the worst part, rather than immediate financial repercussions.

 

Round 5

Finally underway. Melson is jabbing and throwing uppercut flurries to the body as King waits on the outside, ducking and raising both arms over his head. King has no offensive contribution whatsoever. Melson is scrubbing the top of his head with the jab and darting in to land quick left and right uppercuts under the elbows before King can lower them. Pause to fix tape on Melson's glove. Another attack by Melson, ducked. King grabs.

Adams asks Ronnie Shields if he ever worked the corner of a boxer who obviously was only looking to survive and collect a check with no desire to win.

He says absolutely, and it is very frustrating.

Melson is jabbing into King's guard and then hammering at his lower back with the left hand. King is ducking low and shuffling to his left, poking at Melson's body with the jab and right hand. Melson is tossing a right jab and long left uppercut from outside, falling in and getting tied up. King is pressing in against Melson with his arms in his face, then shoving off and circling in a crouch. Melson jabs down at King as he runs in, very low, slapping down at Melson's jab with both gloves to bat it out of the air so he can get close and clinch.

Quinones says he doesn't want to call anybody "just an opponent..."

Shields interrupts and says "If you won't say it, I will. King is just an opponent...but boxing does need guys who are just opponent, to build records and develop young talent, keep them honest. It helps if the guys who are just opponents actually try to be something other than just opponents, however"

 

Round 7

Melson is walking forward and planting his right jab on King's forehead as King sits low on the outside and circles away until hitting the ropes, from which he bounces like a reverse-polarized magnet to spring in and tie up. Melson is cuffing the right hook over King's head as they repeatedly slam together in clinches, with King landing rabbit punches but not even trying for anything legal at range.

Round 8

Melson is jabbing in on the body and the erratically moving head of King. Big overhand left by King, catching Melson walking in and making him blink. King is using lots of movement on the outside, taking careful steps to his left to get around Melson and size him up for another overhand left. Melson twirls to face up to him and gets his guard up, then jabs the body and face at mid-range. King dives in low and holds, then climbs up Melson and chops at his face with a left. Double right hook by Melson, hurting King. Clinch. Bell.

10-9 Melson, King actually putting in an effort for once - but even if he did the same in the first seven he still would've been shut out.

Shields chuckles and says he gives King the eighth as a "mercy round".

This is what King does. He loses decisions to feather-fists who are remotely decent (Boyd Melson, Yuri Foreman, Paul Delgado), get stopped by non-feather-fists who are remotely decent (Brad Solomon, Jonathan Gonzalez, Michael Zewski, Charlie Ota, George Tahdooahnippah) and beats not even marginally decent tomato cans.

He is "just an opponent" - and like it or not, boxing does need his ilk.

...although, it's preferable when you get those who are "just opponents" but care enough to attempt to elevate their station. (like, for instance, Dashon Johnson earlier tonight...or Joseliz Cepeda, for that matter - since he was brought in to help Lou DiBella prospect Neuky Santelise rebuild confidence...)
