Luis Yanez, the light flyweight on the U.S. Olympic boxing team, said the sport's governing body plans to remove him from the squad for a rules violation, according to a report on the Dallas Morning News' Web site.

Yanez, a 19-year-old co-captain of the U.S. team, was sent home to Texas from USA Boxing's training camp in Colorado Springs on Monday. The 106-pound fighter was among three boxers who were excused from a team training event in Argentina last week, and he apparently was late in returning to Colorado Springs from his final trip home before the Olympics.

Yanez, a two-time U.S. champion who won a gold medal at the Pan-Am Games last year, said the delay was caused by his sister's illness. Yanez also attended a send-off dinner in Dallas last Thursday.
"Just being late, that's what they're talking about," Yanez told reporters at the Dallas airport in a video posted on the Morning News' site. "They don't understand that family is really important. For Latinos, like I said, it's a Latino thing. If our family is really ill, I'm going to try to help as much as I can."

USA Boxing CEO Jim Millman and spokesperson Julie Goldsticker didn't respond to repeated requests for comment from The Associated Press on Monday night.

Yanez is allowed to appeal the decision to USA Boxing's judicial committee or request an arbitration hearing.
"I tried to work things out with them," Yanez said. "They didn't want to work things out."
USA Boxing's new yearlong residency program has caused friction between the Olympic boxers and the governing body's new leadership, with several fighters speaking out against their confinement to Colorado Springs. Javier Molina, Gary Russell Jr. and Yanez all have expressed a desire to get more work with their personal coaches instead of U.S. team coach Dan Campbell, who also has been criticized for his autocratic style.
Nine American boxers qualified for the Beijing Games. Yanez isn't among the team's biggest medal favorites while competing in a difficult weight class.

I've seen Yanez fight against a guy I lost to at GG and damn he's fast and he has an incredible stamina. Unfortunately for the other kid, Luiz happens to be his first open fight opponent LOL

I think the way they have the program for this year in the USA sucks.

Taken away from your home for a year. Some having to change schools.

Almost no contact with the coach that brought you to that level

Yeah, and it also means no more repeats of Jason Estrada. The unfortunate thing about this is Yanez is one of the guys who could have medalled with a good draw. Not won Gold necessarily (I think Zou Shiming is pretty much a lock there), but he could have won silver or bronze. It doesn't surprise me though; I thought he might be one of the guys I heard about having an attitude problem.

Oh yeah I forgot that most of the USA olympic team has not fought in a year except for 3 individuals. Since they had them relocate to colorado springs.

Yes, and a lot of that has been due to injuries. Estrada, Rau'shee Warren, and Raynell Williams were all injured. Warren and Williams are also two of the strongest members of the team. Guys who really need the experience, like Deontay Wilder, have been getting it. Same with Gary Russel and up until this point Luis Yanez from what I remember, as they were two of the younger members of the team.

Look, they've had problems with a few guys having attitude issues this whole past year. There's no way he just got kicked off for being late returning to CS. My guess is he was involved in that supposed altercation in Colorado Springs this year, has had a bad attitude with the coaches, and this was the last straw. When you win a place on the Olympic Team, there's a very long contract you sign that states all the rules and the way you're expected to conduct yourself, and I'm assuming he broke one or more of those rules.

i would have a bad attitude too if i was with them for a yeah and the trainer that got you there could not have part in the biggest fights of your ammy career thats crazy even with estrada those coaches had him trying to fight a fight he was not feeling i think they should make a place for the trainers that git them there they know the fighter not some guy that just met them and prob trains every one of them the same way

Yep! Jason Estrada was America's boxing Pearl Harbour!

Better to kick out a fighter who doesnt have the desire and discipline to honour the right to represent an entire country on foreign soil in the greatest sport event on this planent than to repeat Jason Estrada's shinning example of how not to represent the colours of the usa on foreign soil.
