I'm not sure how I feel about Konečný returning at 40 years old, from a nearly five year layoff, which in reality was an unambiguous retirement following the Quillin loss due to accumulated damage on his eye tissue. I've always been a fan of Rib-Bone (yes, that's his nickname ), an honest straightforward fighter who never excelled in any one area but was pretty good in every aspect of the game...and moreover he seems a decent guy, and is the p4p GOAT of the Czech Republic, which is my favorite country. His opponent is a 28 year old from neighboring Slovakia. Beyond that he's a mystery. This is a colossal step up in class for him, based on his record, even with Konečný being old, inactive and half-blind.
Aw man, so he's decent? LK said (in September before the details were officially announced) that his opponent's promoter had approached him with the offer. He said it wasn't for a lot of money (and that he wouldn't be tempted by money anyway, that he's doing this more for reasons of "vanity" - his words - much to his wife's perturbation) but that he couldn't say no. At the press conference he broke down in tears describing how much he realized he missed it the first day of training camp. At the very least even if he loses it does nothing to affect his legacy as the greatest Czech - but I fear him losing the distinction of never having been stopped, needlessly. He seems to have a happy life coaching young boxers and working as municipal sports councilor. I hope whether he gets the W or not this is a one-off.
