Campbell has just announced on a breakfast olympic program that he has retired, he said he achieved his dream of winning olympic gold, and that he pro career was just a bonus, did he have a good career?
Best of luck to the guy. Shame he never quite got over the line for a world title. Lots of fighers worse than him have "World champion" next to their name.
Of course he had a ''good career.'' He had a very fine one when all is said and done Olympic gold medalist World amateur championships silver medalist European gold medalist Two time world title challenger losing a razor-close to Linares in the first one on away soil two weeks after having lost his father, and giving Loma a competitive fight in the second. Was he good enough to win a world title? Undoubtedly but he just was just unlucky that his two shots at winning one came against excellent fighters, to a fringe P4P top 10 (think Linares was #11 at one point) and the P4P #1 at the time.
It's a smart option. He has not what it takes to be at the highest elite level. If the does not want to be a gatekeeper at best, I agree with him, I would retire too, I wouldnt like to be a gatekeeper either afer being a gold medalist. He tried, he couldnt, and that's OK. Not everybody can be mayweather. He achieved more than avarage in the pros. Not bad. Not good, but not bad.
Good decision and he made the most out of his pro career as an Olympic Gold medalist. Enjoy the retirement champ.
A solid professional, who just fought during a period where the champions were better He will be a good coach id imagine if he decides to stay involved with the game
Never shied away from fighting the best around...... could have picked up a world title as a pro given the right fight at the right time but it wasn't to be. Good luck to him in retirement
