Burt, I picked that line up from Groucho Marx.:hey Is he the same source you learned it from?
The way I look at it, these attacks on you are backhanded complements. You've gotten yourself on a pedestal here, and there appears to be some envy for your position of status as an eyewitness to history. Sure, you have strong opinions and aren't shy about expressing them. Without strong opinions, this place would be deader than Myspace.

Since you began here 18 months ago, you've evolved a distinct style and persona all your own. (I remember some of your early contributions, and your posting style has evolved into a readable and recognizable format truly unique to you.)

"Get's a pass for a lot because of his 'status?'" I like having somebody who watched Robinson-Armstrong share his observations of their match here. I like having somebody whose father witnessed Greb-Tunney I convey his story to the rest of us. (Without action footage of Harry, this is about as close as we're ever going to get to Greb.) Burt and JohnGarfield have corroborated the reminisces of one another more than once.

No, I don't agree with Burt on all issues, but I understand and respect his opinions, and we can be gentlemen about any intractable disagreements.

When it comes to civility and decency, Burt's not being arrogant and condescending, he's setting an example the younger among us would do well to emulate. And when it comes to toughness and survival, he comes from a place and time which wrote the book on it.

Challenge him and his opinions? Go right ahead! (And I have clashed with Burt on the subject of Louis versus Ali, among other boxing related subjects.) Some hard core historians have indeed challenged him on certain items in past posts he's made. Just know though that initiating a resort to personal attacks on an individual poster is tantamount to tapping out in a UFC octagon. (Or more appropriately for this site, tantamount to Nelson conceding by deliberately fouling Gans in Goldfield.)

I have to say, I never would have known some of these posters even existed at all if they didn't attack Burt. Maybe Hascup and Garfield are next on their hit list. (I actually have picked on Henry from time to time, but always in a gently good natured manner, never antagonistically.)

A few years back, ChrisPontius and I had some furiously passionate exchanges about Dempsey, but as intense as the conversation got, we never, ever, degenerated into name calling and insults, confining ourselves exclusively to the subject matter, and we've since exchanged some very pleasant PM correspondence. In fact, I've done this a number of times with posters who I've gone toe to toe with on these threads.

Eventually, I may zing Burt from time to time, but always in fun. (And he has the necessary sense of humor to give as good as he gets, hence I haven't attempted this yet.)

PP,You just don't get what the hell is going on, because you have an axe to grind also. I was responding to the thread "Bob Fitzimmons had a pimp-hand", when from out of nowhere I see my name, accused of being "friendly
to KILLING innocent Vietnamese women and babies".From out of nowhere.
What would you do to defend yourself if you were scanning a thread pertaining to Bob Fitz, and see your name accusing you condoning raping little girls ? Well sir, I defend myself, when I am accused of thoughts or deeds I NEVER did. One other thing PP, I have NEVER asked for special dispensations due to my age. NEVER. If I bring up the fact I have seen great fighters in the 1940s,and after, it is not BOASTING, but thinking that some posters would find this interesting.Remember PP, there were boxers before you and Pachilles, and manbearpig were BORN, and I will go on
posting my experiences in spite of these guttersnipes, and PP, I DON'T mean you...Cheers...

D,I truly appreciate you taking time,to convey your warm thoughts.Yes we may differ ala Louis /Ali, but this is what a forum is,a place to air our opinions in a civil manner. Truly since I have been on ESB,I have been
under a constant barrage of personal insults from two lackluster individuals who ESB, and they, know who they are. I enjoy good natured contrary opinions, of the vast majority of ESB posters.Great mental stimulation for me ,but to be called out of the blue, and out of context,of being friendly to the idea of killing innocent women and babies, well D ,that crosses the line
for me. I,say to myself, the hell with this abuse by idiots who attack not my boxing opinions, but me personally. Is it worth it for me ?
In answer to your question of where I got the line"a man is as old as the girl
he feels",unquote. No it wasn't from one of Groucho Marx's lines, but from
Groucho's grandfather Karl Marx with whom I attended university in the mid 1860s. Thank you again D,from the bottom of my heart.:good

I've been a bartender for a number of years. To the best of my knowledge all bourbon is whiskey, but not all whiskey is bourbon. All cognac is brandy, but not all brandy is cognac. See how that works?

As far as the attacks on Burt, pretty cowardly. Done--as cowards do-- behind the safety of a computer screen. Internet message boards seem to be the tool of revenge for certain types.

    C'est la vie....

It would be best to avoid political discussions altogether if you can't handle the frequent personal attacks that go along with such debates.

"Is it worth it for me?" Burt, wrong question perhaps. "Was it worth it to your abusers?" might be more accurate. What you've gotten out of this are friends left and right coming out of the woodwork here to leap to your defense. Not sure what the others are getting out of this.
:thinkI wonder how much you could get for an autographed copy of Das Kapital on Amazon.
:bowdownCheers, Burt! (Don't forget to thank some certain other folks here from the heart of your bottom!:ass)

I'm starting to think that Pachilles, Manbearpig, and Burt are all members of the secret service, desperately trying to keep the truth behind Fitz's marital life under wraps. So they created a diversion in this thread. One which has worked to the tee.

Honestly though, wasn't McGrain's initial post the only one on topic?

As a former bartender myself (Boston Bartender's School alumnus), I second this. (By the way, brandy stingers with freezer stored booze and glasses was the most effective medication I and various family members treated ourselves with when severe colds were afflicting us these past several months. Nothing quite as soothing to the throat, and the abatement of all discomfort when the alcohol kicks in is delightful.)
And now they've gotten themselves branded as cowards for their indiscretion.

I think you and a few other posters are getting a tad over emotional what was a joke, no one accused you of directly raping/killing Burt. But on a serious note, yes soldiers do kill and sometimes unfortunately ****, war is far from a beautiful thing. If you support a war, it's dishonest and immoral to ignore the loss of innocent lives and any moral individual should ask themselves 'how many innocent lives are worth losing for this cause'. If the cause is great enough, ie Nazi Germany, then it's surely worth it, other causes certainly aren't though. And the US as much as I admire them as country have supported wars that weren't worth the innocent loss of life

American's are usually distanced from wars, Sep 11th was the first attack on US soil since Pearl Harbour. Most American's don't have family members killed in war. Guess what people from countries who have lost family memebers in wars aren't usually as pro-war as the 'patriotic' (sarcasm alert) American's who've never lost a family member or friend in war.
