If its lunch time and my stomach is empty and theres a bunch of fatty and sugary foods around, wouldnt it be better to have a nurtional shake instead? I am new to the whole shakes thing so I wanted to ask you guys what brand or what shake could i take to replace a meal? I hear some rumor about protein shakes making people gain weight. Is this true? IAM TRYING TO LOOSE WEIGHT, 15 POUNDS! I dont lift heavy weights so would i still gain weight off the shake? I am Thinking about buying designer whey-http://www.vitaminshoppe.com/store/en/br...

Anyway please give me some good suggestions because I know that during lunch is whats killing my diet so please some suggestions or advice would be appreciated! Thanks in advance guys

Lunch is tough, especially if you are forced to eat out. One thing that has helped me lose weight is to eat SLOW. Chew well. Don't put more food in your mouth while you still have some in. Lunch especially can be a rushed time. Drinking a shake doesn't help if you don't satisfy the hunger and you gulp it down.

Calculate how much energy you are using and take in less.

If a full protein shake puts you over than have a smaller one.

Protein shakes can help assist in weight gain, but thats only if your eating high protein/high fat diet as well. I think the best thing for you to do is buy a couple fruit from the lunch line, I believe they have to have fruit on hand for students. I would grab two fruit and a choclate milk, and tell your mom to get you a big bag of beef jerky, that should last you 3-5 days, and should fill you up nicely.

Beef Jerky is a fast, high protein snack you can eat on the go. Thats what I ate in school, as well as chocolate milk and a apple and a Banana.

Or just crack open an egg.

Or take a tin opener with you so you can dig into some tuna.

Good idea, but not sure about his schools policies, now adays a tin can opener is probably considered a weapon of some sort.

Well, you said you were trying to lose weight, so that was my post. Specifically, the only protien shakes I have had aren't all that pleasant. Down it slow as I suggest and you may have trouble making it to the end. ;) Calories are calories in the end. Also, stick with the unflavored or lightly flavored versions. Vinilla? My son tells me they are no better now that when I tried them. He has to stick to chocholate to mask the taste.

    I answered you.

If you want a more concise answer then it is simply as follows.

    No.

Good point. Now that you point it out, this does have a "magic bullet" feel to it.

Boxing4life. Learn to listen to your body. Experiments show that if you let a kid eat anything they want, over the long haul, they do eat a balanced diet.

In order to lose weight, consume less calories than you expend.

Go here to work out your base metabolic rate (the calories you need to maintain weight if sedentary):

    http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/

To lose 1 pound of fat per week, you want to be at a caloric deficit (burning more than you eat) of 500 per day.

To work out how many calories the food you're eating per day is, go here:

    http://www.fitday.com/

Set yourself up a journal and every day, input what you ate. It also allows you to estimate how much energy you burn if you're not completely sedentary.

If you can eat a junk food lunch and still have a caloric deficit, you'll still lose weight. If you cant, you should eat something healthier and less calorie dense.

What you eat has an impact on your health and how good you feel, but it's still the total calories that matter. If you ate one big mac a day and nothing else you'd probably lose weight, for example. Chances are though that you should replace your unhealthy lunch with something healthy like a tuna or chicken sandwich, or a protein shake.
