anyone remember Larry Holmes number 1 fan Luther Jackson,he used to write in on all the boxing magazines back in the early 1980s
Yep......... He ran numerous comments in the KO KOMMENT section of KO magazine and World Boxing in the early 1980s.......... After Holmes was beat in 1985 by Michael Spinks on HBO, I cannot say I ever heard from him again.......... The hell did Luther go??? Same applies to "Louie The Lip" as well........ It's been yrs since I last read them comments and remarks......... Dem were the good Ol' days when the internet was not happening and boxing magazines like "KO" and "World Boxing" was basically all their was........... The Los Angeles Herald Examiner was a great newspaper with a great sports section that OFTEN had page after page of credible boxing information........ Too bad the paper went out of publication back about 20 yrs ago........ The L.A Times and New York Times suck ass with a deep straw in the coverage of boxing, as does all the other papers still in circulation....... I rarely wast my time with a newspaper anymore..... Too much bull****......... BUT!!! I no longer buy or subscribe to any boxings mags anymore since I'm a mainstream user, sometimes abuser, of ESB......... Why would I want to read month old news from a magazine in 2009??? MR.BILL:huh:good:yep:scaredas::hat
Luther never existed in the first place. He was made up by the writers of World Boxing, KO, etc. Those letters were fakes. Randy Gordon talked about it in his ongoing thread at CBZ.
Bull**** is right!! those magazines were a BIG waste of time but I must admit, many of their covers attracted me to buy even tho I knew what filled the pages inside was pure garbage. it was the sheer bias along with the stupid comments I frequently read that annoyed me. and as you just saw that one poster bring up on Roldan, they would frequently stick their foot in their mouths. All that smack how West Coast fighters couldnt hack it. One look at Richie Sandoval and his beheading of Chandler and that was the last we heard that kind of talk If we had the resources we have today back in early 80s I could educate myself far better w/o having to suffer thru the propaganda of these totally biased writers
I'm not sure if Luther J. was a fictional character or not, but I sense "Louie The Lip" was............. At any rate, I may not rank Lawrence Holmes at # 1, but "The Homer" is a SOLID top-5 heavy on my list.............. Holmes was truly great......... Remember when KO also ran those paper clippings of newspaper reporter: 'CANNON' in the 1980s??? MR.BILL:rasta
He was portrayed as Lary Holmes number 1 fan and the truth is that he was made up by the World and International Boxing editors who actually felt bad for Larry. I was told a story where Larry kept asking for Luther's info so he could invite him to a bout and the editors had to somehow circumvent the potential damage. Somehow they got out of it ...
I actually still buy the Ring Magazine from time to time ,although they are a little over priced I read them because I enjoy the Stories and coverage on the fighters, also I like there little rankings on past fighters that they do. The reason i quoted you because I agree that they were big time biased when it came to West Coast fighters,It use to **** me off and Richie Sandoval was one of my favorites.. "Same name and same area". I loved it when he beat up there beloved Jeff Chandler and was sad for him when Canizales almost killed him. Bert Sugar is still one of these biased east coast writers that I have to listen to on ESPN classic. However the Ring is not as biased as the Magazines used to be as they have a few West Coast writers and The new owner is Oscar.
Thanks HE! After I posted I looked for Randy's "confession" about Luther Jackson at the CBZ & couldn't find it. I love the mags. They're neat little time capsules great for info on what people in the sport were thinking at the time.
Prior to the web / ESB, the best boxing outlets' were KO and RING mags.......... I stopped buying them mags back around 2005........ No need to anymore.......... I always thought 90% of all newspaper sports sections sucked for boxing coverage and I always thought Sports Illustrated was WAY overrated, too......... MR.BILL
