For some reason this story is interesting me at the moment, so I thought I'd gather some articles on him, I'll probably do a proper thread once I've done a bit of research. According to the wiki, he's half irish and half either Gypsy or Native American, making him not very white for a white hope. There's some legend surrounding his death too, so the contemporary reports on that will be interesting. The Daily Missoulian., January 14, 1913, Morning, Page 5 Jack Johnson has begun active training again with the idea of getting back into the game. Now that he has made the move the promoters don't seem as enthusiastic in their denunciation of him as they did a while ago. The black fighter has addressed this appeal to the sporting public: "As far as McCarty and Palzer fighting for the championship—it is absurd. McCarty may be a wonderful boxer, but I will bet $10,000 that I can beat McCarty, Palzer and Willard in the same ring and take on one 15 minutes after defeating the other, and I am not bragging when I say this, as you know that everything that I ever said concerning myself about boxing has come just so true. When I fought Jeffries I told the public just how the bout would come out. The same applies to Burns and Flynn and all the others. "I hope that the American public will forget some of the things that have been said about Johnson and let some of the 'black hopes' and 'white hopes' meet Johnson and fight it out and let the best man win. Yours truly. "Champion John A. Johnson." https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/...+mcarthy+palzer+Mcarthy+Palzer+mcarthy+palzer Pre-fight to his fight with Palzer https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/...palzer+luther+mccarty++Palzer+luther+mccarty+ Fight with Palzer https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/...palzer+luther+mccarty++Palzer+luther+mccarty+ Pre-fight with Pelkey https://cdnc.ucr.edu/cgi-bin/cdnc?a...0--1--txt-txIN-pelkey+luther+mccarty+-------1 His death https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/...pelkey+luther+mccarty++Pelkey+luther+mccarty+ https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/88825235?searchTerm=pelkey+luther+mccarty+ https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/...pelkey+luther+mccarty++Pelkey+luther+mccarty+

From other threads too http://www.cyberboxingzone.com/boxing/w1102-tcandlr.html Various parts of the internet, with a unique and colourfull perspective, talk about light shooting out of him when he died, and claim this is a picture of it. http://www.cyberboxingzone.com/images/w1102mccarty-tensecondsofsunlight.jpg Anyone know the history of that picture? Kinda just looks to me like the light is coming through that skylight. Edit: It's on CBZ so I guess the photo is legit.

He wouldn't be the last white hope that wasn't exactly "white"... See: Carl Morris and Tommy Morrison. He was supposedly very talented and a guy who could have really threatened JJ if given the time to develop. I'll check put those articles soon.
Johnson then in exile offered to defend against him for promoter Tommy Burns in Canada ,but Burns wanted his meal ticket Arthur Pelkey to fight Luther and refused to make the match on the grounds Johnson was not a moral upstanding citizen lol.
The majority thought Willard entitled to the nod in both the McCarty and Smith fights. This content is protected The San Francisco call. (San Francisco [Calif.]), 22 May 1913.
