UPDATE: He doesn't expect to fight Pavlik
    http://www.vindy.com/news/2009/apr/29/after-win-lyell8217s-manager-pursuing-bout/

“I’m not looking for a fight with Kelly,” said Lyell, a Niles native who is coming off the biggest victory of his career. “Pat is my manager and he’s trying to find the biggest fight available, so obviously with Pavlik being the champ, that’s what he’s trying to do.
“I would never turn down a title fight with anyone, but it’s unrealistic that [a Pavlik fight] would ever happen.”

Lyell could also get an opportunity to fight WBA champion Felix Sturm, who also hails from Germany.
“I think I stand a decent chance against either of the Germans,” Lyell said. “I’m looking forward to fighting either of those fights or a fight at super welterweight.”

He is hot stuff right now and it came up in another thread.

I've read the source and they have talked to several people. I think it is Lyell's managers pipe dream though.

It seems to be opening doors for the young man. Good for him.

Sturm's promoter has offered a 3 fight deal, so they may have their eyes on getting him a shot at Sturm too. You don't want to leave Sturm out of this do you? :think

Pavlik has had two defenses. Both mandatories.

I have to ask. How many have seen Lyell fight? I've only seen 3 rounds from a camcorder on utube. He looked fast. Too fast to get Duddy an undefeated/hometown lean enough to steal the victory. So where should this put him at 160? Well, other than he should be fighting at 154.....

I'll tell you this much, from where I see it. I don't have anything against Lyell, and I have no problem supporting a guy whose been around the block getting a payday after what's, by far, his best win. But, outside of Vincent Gottschalk and Bob Arum, John Duddy wasn't viewed as being worthy of a Pavlik fight; as good as Lyell may have been that night, that performance still just puts him a shade above Duddy and he lost pretty convincingly to a prospect (a good one, admittedly) in Martirosyan the fight before that.

I'll give him props for going about his career the hard way, though. Always good to see a fighter like that pull off an upset over the unbeaten guys.

Well i'm pretty sure they have trainined together (lyell and Pavlik) a lot and lyell knows that he would get his ass handed 2 him. I really doubt jack would let them fight atleast at this point in lyell's career. I mean he just had the biggest win of his lifetime why set him up 4 failure right away? Let him have his chance 2 fight top 10 guys and make a lil money 1st.

Wondered what happened to you. Welcome back.

My take after reading the story was that Lyell's manager has $ signs in his eyes and wants to strike while the iron is hot. My gut feeling is pretty much what you just stated. I think these two must know each other well enough to know how that fight would turn out.

On a side note. I wonder why Jack bothered showing up to corner Lyell? Lyell's style is all wrong for Jack. We know from reading ESB Jack doesn't know anything about the type of stuff Lyell has going for him, other wise, we would see Kelly using more of the 'slick', no?

I really have no problem with what you are saying. I'm still trying to find out where people think he would fit in at 154 since he says that is his natural weight class. I'm really not that familiar with that weight class. Lyell did lose to the gun slinger a few years back, but that was while he was still boxing part time and going to school. Too late, just can't recall the guys name that just got busted in Texas..... He said Kelly hit him harder in sparring with 16 ounce gloves that KIRKLAND, just came to me, did in the fight. Sounds like his manager wants to keep him at MW though because of Duddy's ranking. I think that is a mistake.

This kid is 6-5 in his last 11 fights..... how does that warrent a title shot???

And minus Duddy his last five opponents he beat had a combined record of 34-55-6.

Lyell is terrible and Duddy isnt much better and no way should beating Duddy earn him a title shot....

Yea i just been busier than usual. If they are just using him for that hopes of a big money fight thats sad and esp 4 kelly its a lose-lose for him if he wins ok great he gets no credit and he just beat another bum(press says) if he looses he got exposed. It would be a bad call by jack.

I heard that billy has not always been with jack he was kind of a roamer in and out of differnt gyms not really taking it serious. So maybe thats why he doesnt reflect jacks style....yet???

I read the opposite about Billy and Jack. They've been together since Billy was a kid.

Billy says he does not want the fight. He said he thinks he stand a good chance "against either of the Germans," but does not fancy a fight with Kelly.

Personally I think Pat Nelson, Lyell's manager, is just using Pavlik's name, and the Y-town connection, to coax a little more money out of Sauerland and Universum; both have contacted Nelson.

Neither Sturm nor Abraham will fight him. Universum and Sauerland have a lot of other middleweights: Golovkin, Gevor, ... I doubt they'll match Zbik with him (or any other live body) though.

He may (I haven't seen any of his fights) be much better than Sato but he won't get title shot against Sturm or Abraham because he has a lot of defeats which makes it impossible to hype him as a "dangerous" opponent. Most of Erdei's/Sturm's weak opponents had one loss or were undefeated before the fight.
