Being competitive? How about winning? That should matter far more than being competitive, shouldn't it?

Yeah, Ron Lyle is more known for being competitive in major fights and for being on the losing end of his brawl with Foreman. Similar to Razor Ruddock and Andrew Golota in that respect.

Jack Dempsey was voted greatest fighter of the first half century, not greatest heavyweight - greatest fighter by the so called fight men we like to call scholars.

So let me get this straight, Dempsey doesn't have a prayer against Lyle.... Because Lyle lost all his biggest fights.

    Sound argument.

Jack Dempsey in the 70s would have been another guy in the bunch, probably at the same level of the food chain as quarry or shavers. Small,188 pounds, crude, jurassic, not a granite chin, not even close of being the hardest puncher of the era. He could be the star in his own era but here he would be mediocre. No small cruiser brawler would beat lyle toe to toe

Lyle did put Foreman down twice. Ruddock did not a crap.
    Just a little punctuation

tbf Foreman hadn't fought in 2 years and was noticeably rusty. I do agree though that he put on a better showing than Ruddock.

Lyle looked much more competitive against a young Foreman than Tyson did against a past prime Holyfield right? So it should be taken in count, not only if he lost or won

But Tyson was not at his peak neither

I'd agree but I think he was much closer to it than Foreman in their respective bouts with Lyle and Foreman. He did look better than he did against Douglas.

I'd take Lyle, especially after watching the video of the short sparring session between Dempsey and Tate. Dempsey was "squared" a lot during that session and it was only a minute or two. Fighting squared against a strong, hard hitting, well schooled fighter like Lyle would probably make for a short fight. Dempsey would also be giving up 30-35 pounds.

I seen undefeated Big Ron Lyle in MSG vs Jerry Quarry who had a bit of baby fat at 6' ft 200 lbs ( Jerry was not cut) Lyle weighed 219 - Quarry won a UD - he hurt Lyle and after that Ron was careful and Jerry won a clear UD

Dempsey IMO could do everything better than Quarry and hit harder, I think the fight starts out with action from bot men but the heavy hands and stamina of Jack take over to stop Lyle before or around the 8-9 th round

Ruddock went 19 rounds with a still worthy Mike Tyson when nobody wanted a piece of Ruddock. And Ruddock did put some solid heavyweights to sleep.

    So there's that...

I take Dempsey in a competitive bout. Dempsey was faster than Foreman and hit hard in his own right. Lyle may have knocked Dempsey down but I think that Dempsey ultimately stops Lyle

He lost close fights against greats that would have had no problem dispatching of Jack.
