It certainly isn't his best win, it's just his best filmed performance. Tommy Gibbons, Fred Fulton, and Billy Miske were better wins.
Who did more in their respectives fights? Who was closer to win the fight? Lyle and lyle very debatable but anyway totally irrelevant here, we are talking about their fights against Foreman and Tyson, the reputation of Lyle is much more deserved than ruddock's
I know, Quarry was slower, Quarry was a uncut 200lbs, Quarry was easier to hit, Dempsey hit harder, Dempsey was better than any version of Quarry and I was a big fan of Jerry- I had ringside tickets for his 1st round KO of Shavers- 6th rd KO of 24-0-24 ko Big Mac Foster and I saw him hurt an undefeated Ron Lyle (which keep Lyle at bay and more careful) - Quarry was very good fighter but no where in Jack Dempsey's league
Like i said it makes no sense, quarry was not even similar to dempsey stylistically, also quarry had a better chin than dempsey and was a counter puncher, dempsey was a crude small brawler,i think that lyle destroys him but if you pick Dempsey good for you but your reason based on quarry makes no sense
The tread is a question of who would win - Dempsey was a better fighter then Quarry- hit harder- faster- meaner- taller- better conditioned and IMO a better fighter - so I pick Dempsey to stop Lyle
A lightheavy with no wins of significance at heavy, the David Price of his era and a chronically ill cruiserweight... the stuff of legends.
I've always liked Dempsey and thought he looked much better on video than what came before him, but watching him spar with Bill Tate shows him bending at the waist a lot, head down, and fighting with his feet "squared." He still looks better than the older fighters, but as he was in that video, I wouldn't pick him against a guy like Lyle or Quarry. It's also hard to believe that Bill Tate couldn't easily beat Willard if given the chance. I know Tate's record is not impressive, but maybe he was fighting the avoided black fighters of the day and either laying down for some fights or taking them on short notice in the other fighter's hometown. Tate looks at least equal fundamentally to Dempsey and his movement for a big man is in a different universe than Willard's. Watching this sparring session makes me think that having a title in that era might not mean that the champion beat the best fighters. I don't know how well Dempsey himself would have done with Tate in a real fight where both were equally prepared. If Tate was drilled to uppercut when Dempsey was squared and bent at the waist...? Bummy Davis posted that Dempsey is superior to Jerry Quarry. From watching the video of Quarry vs. Miteff and watching Dempsey spar Tate (best opponent I've seen of Dempsey on video), I don't think so. I'd bet on Quarry.
