Dempsey wasn't just a brawler and he wasn't crude.

So you still don't watch real fights? Well, this time at least you picked real fighters, not actors goofing around.

Crude brawler is the perfect definition for him . and it is normal for his time, you are talking about a boxer from 1920

Why is Lyle over rated? He put up two very good fights vs Ali and Foreman. He also beat many of they guys Ali, Frazier, Norton and Foreman fought, sometimes by a more impressive margin! Lyle had skills. I'm not sure what you mean by didn't have the skill set to deal with Dempsey.

Born at another time, Lyle could very well been a champion. Or if he staring pro boxing sooner ( Lyle was 30 ), maybe he would have been a champion in the 1970's.

Dempsey to me is wide open on defense, and didn't come close to facing the competition level Lyle did. Lyle had trouble with speed and defensive counter types. Maybe Dempsey could jump on Lyle early and take it. Or maybe Lyle would find him easy to hit and finish Dempsey.

It's a guess due to a thin resume on Dempsey side.

Lyle wasn’t very good. Strong guy but gets destroyed by any halfway decent fighter. Foreman was Lyles best shot because of his terrible defense. Foreman was also rusty if I recall (forgot). Ali was past his best at that point. Lyle was ok...maybe the Layne of his time. Put up a good fight w the best but was a C fighter. That’s not an insult either he just wasn’t on the level. Poor stamina, defense, chin, combos, mediocre speed. Was nothing special about Lyle besides his power.

So boxer from 1920 like Benny Leonard was just a crude brawler as well? Or Gene Tunney?

They were not brawlers, stop changing my words. Plus leonard and tunney were very rare exceptions advanced guys for his own time in the style just as were jack johnson or jim corbett

Gazelle Punch said Lyle "gets destroyed by any halfway decent fighter." Gazelle Punch must have an extremely high opinion of Gerry Cooney and Lynn Ball since they are the only two to "destroy" Ron Lyle. He relegates fighters who are held in high esteem by most like Ali, Foreman, Shavers, Peralta, Bonavena, Quarry, Middleton, Ellis, Young, Bugner, to the trash heap. 'Ol GP has high standards...Dismisses Lyle as having "poor stamina, defense, chin, combos, mediocre speed."

A guy like GP must have really seen some "good ones" in his time, maybe somebody can interview him on video and post it, it'd be interesting to find out who he has seen and who makes the grade with him. This guy must be The Boxing Expert.

Except it's not, there were many great boxers back then, just like in any other era.

Dempsey was much more than just a brawler and he could outbox even good boxers. Not to mention that he wasn't crude at all. He could be wild at times, but his punching techique and defense were quite refined.

Sure, he threw short and compacted punches that carried huge power. His overhand right is excellent weapon and his left hooks were arguably the best at HW division.

You’re an obnoxious child. Maybe reading is beyond you but I did state he was a good fighter. Just not in the A class. Grow up clown.
