low guard, wild attack with his head in front like a mad bull, his defense was his fast footwork and decent move of head, throwed wild open shots, he was not "refined" at all. a refined version was Mike Tyson, much better skill, better combinations, better guard a much more disciplined style
Well, your O and my O differ... Getting beat by Risko and Levinksy and Weinert isn't the same as getting beat by Foreman, Ali and Quarry. And I wish I could comment on Tunney but I can't find a heavyweight resume under his name that is worth commenting on.
Read your first sentence, it says, "Lyle wasn't very good." Here is some advice, when you write things like that you expose yourself as a "know nothing." Maybe you should stick to reciting old names that you learned in your Bert Sugar story book? When you try to give an opinion on boxing skills it is obvious that you are lost.
Once again you bring nothing to the table. What’s Lyles best win? A shopworn Oscar and it was a close one from what I’ve read. The only thing you expose is your own ignorance and child like behavior. Try reading the whole statement before spouting nonsense child. Lyle was a C fighter get over it.
Lyle maybe the Layne of his times? No way. Lyle would have been Dempsey's best opponent besides Tunney. As I explained above he beat some of the opponents that Ali, Foreman, Frazier, and Norton fought by an easier margin. Lyle's chin wasn't an issue until the end of his career.
Layne was a good fighter as well. With some good wins. But failed a lot. Lyle was an excellent fighter. I should restate my position because maybe I didn’t write it out well enough. I call him a C fighter but that’s not meant as an insult. I mean it in the grand scheme of greatness. He always put up a good fight and could beat a B fighter sometimes but he wasn’t beating most better fighters. He was a great fighter in the grand scheme of things but in terms of great fighters he was a class below Dempsey.
I'd pick Lyle to beat every Dempsey opponent outside of Tunney and that fight would be close. Tunney won 18 or 19 of 20 round vs Dempsey and would have stopped him had the fight been 15 rounds. Lyle was one clean punch away from finishing Foreman, and in the lead on points over Ali until the ref stopped it ( round 11 ), which looked early to me as Lyle was on his feet, with his gloves up. Ali could have punched himself out had it not been stopped. Ali and Foreman are great. Lyle doesn't even get the Joe Frazier treatment for testing them, but he should. That's who Lyle was. If Dempsey fought Lyle's superior competition, you might call him a C fighter too.
I think it would be a very good fight. Very exciting until Dempsey knocks Ron out. I would expect Jack to get decked a few times along the way. Ron was a good talent. Strong man. Skilled. But nobody losing to Jerry Quarry is beating Jack Dempsey.
