I've entered a thread where both fighters are so overrated it's matches the fateful night of 1997-06-07.

Dempsey wins. On account of it being a brawl, and a faster fighter finds his mark first.

Possibly but the Ali that Lyle fought was a shell of the man and he couldn’t get a win. I can’t think that guy would beat a prime Dempsey and I’m not even big on Dempsey. He barely makes my top 20. Lyle just makes my top 50.

Correct, dempsey in the Lyle era would not have been the best at any department, only a small aggressive explosive guy that was too big for the lhw division and too light for the best hws of the division. Jess willard was a punching bag with farmer body. However if you use a time machine and you put lyle just like he was in the 1920s and he would have been looked like a black force and probably would be avoided by a lot of the opposition.
it is quite possible that lyle would have made a bigger impact in 1920 than dempsey does in the 70s

We had Lyle-level fighter in 1920s and his name was George Godfrey.

Lyle wouldn't have been even the best contender of the 1920s.

Any good puncher with a proven chin can given Dempsey trouble. I think he would weather the worst of it by round 3 or 4 if I'm honest. Dempsey KO.

Lyle would have been the undisputed champ and cleaned out the division.

No, Lyle wasn't better than Harry Wills and he didn't clean out division.

You stole that from me! I'll let it slide because you're one of my favorite posters however.

Edit: Seems like you came up with it first. My apologies!

Then you base it on what? What makes Lyle so much better than Harry Wills or even George Godfrey?

Wills was an inflated product ,he lost by ko against nobodies when he was young, mcvea was past his prime when wills did beat him and he did beat wills when he was a little younger.
Langford was pfp a great fighter but too small for the hw division and still he knocked out wills. Different eras added to the fact that wills was not a great thing, lyle probably would knock him out.
George Godfrey a career full of tomato cans . he lost to the very best guys that he fought, now you can say that lyle lost to the very best that he fought too but his opposition was miles better
