Larry Holmes said he hit harder than Tyson.

He sparked Liston in sparring, from what is a legitimate story from all accounts.

Quarry was amazed at his power, and there's no shame in not bombing Jerry out. I don't think anyone ever did.

Plus he's got numerous impressive knockouts.

Where do you rank solely his power?

Holmes also said Ken Norton hit harder than Tyson. There is no shame in not knocking out Quarry, but landing cleanly and failing to hurt him is not too wildly flattering as regards one's power; Quarry was dropped by a few obscure journeymen (Memphis Al Jones decked him twice). Foster never stopped a durable opponent, or a serious name opponent who was anywhere near his prime. It's possible he hit as hard as anyone, but there is no good evidence of such from his career.

Anyone else have any input on one of the forgotten heavies of the 70's?

Maybe Foster was a truly devastating puncher who was just a little too mechanical or too muscle bound to be able to connect with a clean punch. I have seen that combination of strengths and weaknesses in powerful heavyweights before. My understanding is that Foster was indeed a very heavy hitter, although Holmes's claim that Foster hit harder than Tyson is surely bunk.

    What makes it inherently untrue?

If you're talking about Foster's power relative to Tyson's, I think we've seen enough of both fighters to know that there is a big difference between them as punchers. Tyson was exceptional. Very exceptional.

Foster NEVER STOPPED A RATED OPPONENT.
Ive never seen proof that Liston was kod by Foster in training,so would take it with a pinch of salt till I did,Foreman could not dent an aged Liston's chin in sparring. Tyson kod many rated men with good chins Foster DID NOT,the conclusions are there to be drawn .

Foster was along the lines of an Alex Stewart type that gets the ko's against 2nd tier guys and then doesn't have the technique to do anything more than shake up or stun top level heavies. That's also one of the reasons you look closely at heavies with the ko's and see who they're against & if the same results continue against the top 10 guys.

Martin was a very hard puncher , I saw him stop Thad Spencer in London in the Boxing News Fight OF The Year, he floored Spencer twice before the stoppage. Martin koed a Liston who was by conservative estimates over 40 ,watch the fight on you tube its a terrific right hand that floors Sonny. Martin stopped Sonny Banks who subsquently died of his injuries the man could whack . You show your ignorance on the subject Charlie , but, as Tom Jones said "Its Not Unusual".
