It just proves once again that styles make fights ... Sonny won that decision no doubt but he did not look like Sonny the destroyer in the second half of the fight ... by having the skills and speed to fight a fast defensive fight Machen brought him down to Earth .. Liston looked fallible for sure ... makes me think what an Archie Moore or Joe Walcott let alone a Jack JOhnson might have done to him ...

I thought Liston would kill him, my Dad had a bet on Clay/Ali , he said Liston was complacent, rusty and, lacked rounds plus he got really good odds,I was amazed when I saw the result.

Geez, you expect Liston to easily defeat every prime top contender he ever faces? No one can be held to such high standards. I don't think any heavyweight champion went through their top prime opposition as easily as Liston did(Williams 2x, Patterson 2x, Machen, Folley). I think Liston having to be put in 2nd gear and really turn it on and work his way to a hard fought win, is very good for his legacy. Every ATG goes through a challenge in their careers.

I agree but it does make me wonder how he'd have done against a super crafty master of pace like Moore or a 1949 Ezzard Charles ...

You misunderstand,my Dad's theory was that Liston had only 3rds of actual ring combat in 3 years,so he," lacked rounds".

i think the cooper knockdown was a rude awakening for ali. time to get real serious now and stop taking chances cuz of his prediction. knew he couldn't take any of these chances v liston so you saw a totally focused fighter. he came of age at the right time.
