Ed Soares, the manager for Lyoto Machida, has confirmed to MMAWeekly.com that Ultimate Fighting Championship officials have offered the Brazilian a fight against former UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz.

According to Soares, Machida has accepted the fight and at this point, they are waiting to find out if Ortiz will accept the bout.

“It would be an honor to fight such a legend as Tito Ortiz,” said Machida. “I would like to see how my technique matches up against his.”

Machida is coming off of, quite possibly, the most impressive victory of his career. He submitted highly touted Pride veteran Sokoudjou at UFC 79 just 4:20 into the second round. The win kept him undefeated and improved his professional record to 12-0 (including four victories in the UFC).

A win over a veteran fighter like Ortiz would seemingly put him a fight or two away from a title shot.

Ortiz – who can be seen on the popular NBC television series “The Celebrity Apprentice” – was last seen in the Octagon in a draw with Greg Jackson-trained fighter Rashad Evans at UFC 73 in July of 2007. He is reportedly on the last fight of his current UFC contract.

Well, Tito has to accept it first. But I imagine shortly. The Celebrity Apprentince crap is already filmed and done. This is the perfect way to really put Machida over for a title shot, beating the living **** out of Ortiz.

Not a bad fight. Tito is a big enough name that it should finally put Machida on the map. It's also a fight he should win quite handily. A lot of people are saying, "We can finally see Machida face a real tough wrestler!", but I just don't see Ortiz as that big of a threat on the ground anymore. He's not a great wrestler, and he hasn't used his "awesome" GnP on anyone of note in years. I think the last person he took down and truly beat the hell out of was Ken Shamrock. I'm also pretty sure they had to go to a nursing home to pick Ken up before that fight.

I don't think Tito Ortiz will take this fight. He's looking for marquee opponents at this point in his career. No disrespect to Machida - who is an excellent fighter - but I don't think Ortiz will want this. After turning down the Evans rematch, Ortiz said something to the effect of not wanting to - give these other guys a chance to look good off his name.

I think you guys are underestimating Tito, Tito has a great chance to win this fight believe it or not, Machida is not a good wrestler and does not have great takedown defense, Machida has never had to deal with a wrestler before certainly not one as big and strong as Tito.

I could defintley see Tito dominating the smaller Machida by taking him down and controlling him on the ground.
Machida is a good striker but isn't a hard puncher, so Tito won't be afraid of him like he was with Chuck.

    I'm tentatively going with Tito.

This is a intriguing fight and I really hope it happens because this is the win for Machida that although it might not be his best cause Sokodjue and Franklin were awesome wins to but this would be the one that gives him a big name and a title shot. For Ortiz this win finally gives him what hes been looking for for awhile which is a big win vs a prime fighter and hopefully a clear one.

I don't know how you can make this assumption from what we have seen. Machida's footwork is so superior in the way he moves around the ring that any wrestler is going to have a hell of a time getting a shot on him. People said the same **** about Machida going against a superb judoka in Sokodjou, how Arona couldn't take him down so Machida had no chance, and lo and behold he makes Soko look like he never fought a day in his life.

I'll be surprised if Tito takes the fight, Machida has made all of his oppenents look bad...and I don't think Tito would be able to get to him. I'll bet Tito-Silva would be more intriging to him...The truth is I'll bet Dana wants Tito to take this fight because if Tito should lose again his value would be even les then it is now. Tito needs.... Ortiz-Shamrock 4

I predict that if Tito has a chance to run from this fight, he certainly will. I'm guessing he turns it down.

For sure. Tito has the knees of an 80 yr old, he's totally shot - 'name' money fights are all he can accept, losing to up and comers is the end.
