I remember at the time scoring the fight and wondering how in gods name macklin lost. I remember him taken 5 or 6 of the first 6 rounds easily and the last 6 were close but a good few macklin clear rounds only now have I came across the punch stats and its shocking. Macklin outlanded sturm in 11 out of the 12 rounds and in the other sturm only outlanded him by 2 shots. in power punching macklin outlanded him in every round. in the first 3 rounds combined macklin outlanded him in power shots 75-15! http://www.***********.com/forums/view.php?pg=sturm-macklin-compubox total punch stats - Macklin landed 314 punches, sturm landed 187 punches total power punches landed - Macklin 255, sturm 111 how did everyone else score the fight. I remember giving macklin 8-9ish rounds. was this one of the biggest robberies of recent times?
Macklin 115-113 or 116-112 Depending on the 5th round (close) and the 7th round (close). Both rounds could have gone either way, particularly the 5th (I scored it for Sturm)...!!! Macklin was leading on my scorecard 88-83 heading into the 10th, but Sturm finished by sweeping the last 3 rounds...!!! MY SCORECARD: ......Macklin........Sturm......Total 1.....10................9.............10-9 2.....10................9.............20-18 3.....10................9.............30-27 4.....10................9.............40-36 5.......9...............10............49-46, close 6.....10................9.............59-55 7.....10................9.............69-64, close 8.......9...............10............78-74 9.....10................9.............88-83 10.....9...............10............97-93 11.....9...............10........106-103 12.....9...............10........115-113
I had it 115-113 which I changed from my original 116-112 but both scores are fine. The biggest beneficiary from the Macklin robbery was Murray, who did not deserve his draw I scored that match 115-113 for Sturm.
It has been interesting reading back through its RBR thread while reminiscing about this fight. First off, I'd completely forgotten about John Duddy's brief foray into commentary: Shame he didn't keep it up. Not a name you hear much of anymore, nor should he be discussed among the elites of even his own era (let alone historically) but he was a blood and guts staple of the sport for a few years and jammed plenty of asses in seats while he was active. It would be great to see him on TV. I read he spent a while after retirement bouncing around different blue collar jobs (was a mover at one point) before trying his luck with acting...back in 2014, which obviously nothing has come of, that I know of. :verysad Crazy that Yori Boy Campas, against whom Duddy fought an epic war a decade ago, outpaced him by almost six years before calling it a career. That was supposed to have been a torch passing from the old warrior to a young one.
