Former British super-middleweight champion Brian Magee has withdrawn from purse bids for a fight against reigning champion Paul Smith.

Magee's mananger and father, Pat Magee, informed the British Boxing Board of Control by e-mail on Wednesday stating: "Brian Magee has decided not to challenge Paul Smith for the British super-middleweight title. Accordingly, the purse bids for this contest should be cancelled."

This follows months of negotiations with Magee's camp and Smith's promoter Frank Warren offering the Belfast man the opportunity of fighting Smith on Saturday, July 17.

Liverpudlian Smith, who captured the British title with a hard-fought points win over Tony Quigley last October before a brutal defence against Tony Dodson in March, is disappointed by Magee's reluctance to face him.

"I'm not going to shoot my mouth off saying that Magee is scared because he has proved himself by winning the European title against Mads Larsen in Denmark and has fought the some of the best domestic super-middles in Carl Froch and Robin Reid." said Smith.

"So I'm left wondering why he doesn't want to fight me and take the opportunity to challenge for his British title again to add to his European belt.

"It's a fight that the fans really want to see. We are the top two super-middleweights in Britain so let's see who is the best."

Promoter Frank Warren added, "We are trying to make the big fights the fans want to see, but it's a big let-down when, after months of negotiating, it leads to nothing.

"It heads to purse bids and then they pull out on the day.

"Paul's already beaten Dodson and Quigley so Magee would have been a good name to add to his record."

The Hattons are beginning to **** me off. Any purse bid they don't win, or look like they won't win, they just get there fighters to vacate the title.

    Barker vs Macklin
    Magee vs Smith

to big domestic fights we will not see because of the Hattons.

Correct. Think we were all happy when Hattons broke the strangehold of old promoters but for me they've been worse than the rest. All we get is vacant titles.

eactly. to me it seems that other promoters are prepared to let there fighters be on other shows if they lose bids.

He was already offered a fight with Bute and refused it so it's not like he is holding out for a title shot. There was a big thread about it over on box rec and Smigga himself was there. Think, not 100%, that Magee felt Smigga was asking for too much of the purse.

They offered him 50-50 which I think is fair. European may be higher than the British but Smith is the bigger draw and would do 8,000 in Liverpool. Add to that he is ranked 5 by the WBO.

No it was only purse bids for the british title, Magee would've been putting the european up as a voluntary defence only
