Magnificent 7 Predictions: Brook vs Jennings

why is jennings listed on boxrec as fighting for the british title on the smigga undercard in October?

 

Jennings, surprisingly easily.

It's a huge step up from average domestic level to high Euro level for Brook, not one I'm expecting him to be capable of making in one fight.

Jennings isn't an easy fight for anyone outside the top 10.... something Brook will discover the hard way :yep

 

Well, I think he's a better fighter than Matthew Hatton.... the European champion

Certainly more proven than Brook too - McIntyre and Lomax are reasonable (at best) wins, Bienias is terrible really.

I'm not saying it's beyond him, but like Pascal last week a lot of people are overlooking the underdog in what's a hard fight to call.

I've just got a strong feeling Brook isn't all he's cracked up to be - certainly in the punching department, and we've yet to see him out box someone that can actually box.

Kell's not been past 6 rounds, his opposition are only ok at best while Jennings musnt be ashamed of Cotto fight (big time experience) been 12 rounds with decent fighters in young mutley, takaloo and bradley price who have all in spurts fought better than thier record and trump anyone on brooks list of victims. So surely it says Jennings Ud and a clear 1 at that all day long.... but somethings nagging at me.

Every now and then someone you didnt rate that highly might just turn out a performance that makes you watch and go 'wow... he IS the real deal' I think there is plenty of scope for that in most of the fights on the bill and i have a feeling this 1 could be it. Purely because he hasnt fought anyone of note therefore surely he's just another over-protected FW fighter set to be found out. Like i say this nagging feeling says Brook might be as 'special' as he claims to be. hmmmmm

Not sold on brook this should give us a better picture of what kind of level he is at I am going to say brook on points but but only by 2 or 3 rounds

 

Jennings, Brooks makes many cringeworthy errors, hasn't fought anyone of note, has had problems outside the ring lately and doesn't punch anywhere near as hard as his last few fights suggest.

I feel that I have been discrediting Jennings too much in the build-up to this fight, due to the fact that I am a fan of Brook. But after re-evaluating the fight with a clear, non-biased head, I expect a close, nip and tuck fight.

The experience obviously lies with Jennings. He has fought decent domestic opposition in Young Mutley, Bradley Pryce and Takaloo (albeit a faded Takaloo), as well as fighting in the Garden against Miguel Cotto, where he didn’t disgrace himself. Brook really can’t match Jennings in this department. He gained experience as being the ‘away’ fighter against McIntyre, but that’s about it as the fight itself didn’t really help him due to it being, in the end, a rather simple one round blow out. McIntyre has so far been his best opponent, with Lomax, Jones and Bienias being ok opponents.

Power lies with Brook. Jennings has a decent enough whack, but while Brook is not a concussive puncher, he has enough power to get your attention and command respect. With Jennings usually boxing on the back foot, he can’t get the same leverage into his punches, while Brook is the opposite as he likes to fight as the aggressor.

People worry about Brook’s stamina as he has never been beyond 7 rounds, but he paces himself well and doesn’t waste any punches. Jennings stamina is not in question; always keeps up a high work rate and has been the 12 round distance on numerous occasions. Jennings might not be as accurate as Brook, but he is much more active and is more proven than Brook in this area.

People also worry about Brook’s punch resistance, mainly because he hasn’t been in with any punchers and was floored by Karl David. He was caught by David, but I don’t think he was necessarily hurt (he went right back at attacking David). Jennings has a decent beard. His only stoppage came at the hands of Cotto (body shots) and has gone the distance with big punchers like Pryce (although caught cold by Pryce in the 1st round of their fight) and Takaloo. Have to go with Jennings having the better punch resistance as he is, again, more proven in this area.

To go along with the more proven punch resistance, I feel Jennings has the better defence. He is a slick fighter with good head movement (hard to catch clean), has a solid defence and good footwork. Brook has decent reflexes himself, but he doesn’t put his hands up and is wide open when he starts to throw more punches than just the jab. That, and his chin in the air, could prove to be costly against a quality operator in Jennings.

I think the key punch in this fight will be the jab. Both are prominent users of the jab; Jennings likes to double and triple it up, while Brook’s is more commanding. They both have a quick jab, although I feel Brook has a slightly faster one. Its close, but I do think Brook’s jab is better, and it could be key.

I worry about Brook’s recent trouble outside of the ring, and lack of action in it, but I feel his accuracy and superior jab will win him a close, possibly even controversial, decision. Similar to the recent Cloud vs Johnson fight in terms of punches landed/thrown, I feel Jennings will be busier and land more punches, but Brook will land the more telling blows and with him being on the front foot, he will get the benefit from the judges.
