It is only the same belt in name, not in achievement. When Ali et al. competed for the belt, they competed for the legitimate world title. The WBA World Championship belt has essentially been renamed WBA (super).

The WBA may well be a mess, but they are a mess only because fans legitimise their worthless marketing strategy by allowing themselves to be mollycoddled by it.

If fans completely ignored the WBA (regular), then there would only be one WBA belt and guess what it would be called? The WBA World Championship belt.

A name is only as valuable as the premise or operation which stands before it. Were Cassius Clay's achievements eradicated or in any way skewed when he changed his name to Muhammad Ali? Obviously not.

The WBA (regular) belt is a worthless title at the highest level of boxing and should not be viewed by any, as a world title. Alexander Povetkin, Lucas Browne or Manuel Charr have not held a world heavyweight title. Unfortunately, because some fans buy into it, and promoters and broadcasters use it as a vehicle for illegitimately drumming up interest, other organisations may rename their second string belts more discretely and eventually we will have at least 8 "world title" belts per division.

Charr is now on his way to Florida.

I hope Don King remembered to book the venue!

Shumenov is on the undercard? I thought he retired due to a bad eye injury?

Don King has sent a petition to the WBA to make Charr the champion in recess and have Bryan vs Stiverne for the vacant belt.

    The plot thickens. :sherlock:

Any good lawyer makes Don King pay for this.
I dont unterstand, why they are trying to avoid Charr. Bryan would win this without any problems.

He would still win, because Charr has an artificial hip, was inactive for 3 years and was never really good.

Not chronologically old, no, but since his prime (around 30 years of age or so in his case) he got stopped thrice + slapped around by Duhaupas, and now has over three years' worth of rust caked on.

Plus even in his prime he was only barely squeaking by Zack Page, carrying a shot to hell Danny Williams nearly a full eight rounds, and got brutalized in a schooling at the hands of 41 year old Vitali who in all honesty was toying with him and giving maybe 65%.

Then in runs Valuev with a chair shot from behind and then a chokeslam and jackknife powerbomb to break Foreman's record and become the oldest man to regain the heavyweight championship! :ibutt

Very fitting that both Vitali and Lennox went out on TKO cut victories.
